As someone who knows the author (and who moved into the cabin when she moved out, following the loss of my own home), I can attest that her descriptions of life in the cabin and its surroundings are spot on and accurate, as well as emotionally honest and true. It was sad, but so tenderly written and wise that the tears that came were cleansing ones.This memoir will ring true to anyone who has ever lost a home or a beloved pet or been part of a dysfunctional family or a tight-knit community or all of the above, and it is written so poetically and with such emotional honesty that even if you haven't experienced any of that, you will feel that you understand it.

Karen has described her world so completely that a visual person can see the rough beauty and experience the beauty and awe of her surroundings. She has described her emotional world in such a way that I was vicariously getting it. I've felt that way.....I've been there! She describes the changes of that mountain environment so that even if you have not experienced the changes in season at an 8,000 foot altitude, you realize the impact on those people who live in this harsh yet spectacular environment. To me, perhaps the most important perspective was the sense of ritual and celebration. The melting of the spring thaw and the anticipation of the first wildflowers, the journal to list the day that each new flower appears. The planting of a garden in the high country which is a wonderful appetizer for the fauna of the area. The stars......you have never seen stars like this in the flatlands. The planning your life around the changes of an incredibly beautiful place.Thank you, Karen, Rough Beauty took me on a journey to capture and remember all of the perspectives of my life in the high country. I still spend time in that cabin in Peaceful Valley and each visit is a celebration. I read and thoroughly enjoyed this book while sitting on the back deck of that cabin.

Before you buy...- All audio bibles suffer from not being separated into book or chapter (yes, this includes the Audible version). This can make navigating to specific locations in your audio bible quite tedious.- You can listen before you buy at "Bible Study Tools" (dot com). It's free to use on the website, if you would rather save the money.- This version has no sound effects or music, just the voice actor.- Some may find the narration off-putting as the voice actor is using a fake accent. It sounds fine to me. Just know it's a performance.Why I purchased this audio bible over others...- I didn't want music or sound effects getting in the way of scripture.- The voice actor doesn't go fast and run his words together like others I've heard.---I ended up purchasing the MP3 version from a popular book store website (B&N). Recent reviews of the Audible version state that it comes in 19 parts, each part numbered. My version came as MP3 files numbering 001 to 448. As you can see, neither version is conducive to selecting book or chapter.I knew this ahead of time, after reading reviews, so I opted for the version I could control myself. After receiving the files, I set about restructuring them into book and chapter. As you can imagine, this took hours to complete, but the end result was worth it. I now have an audio bible separated by book and chapter, for easy navigation and listening.Granted, the average user isn't going to be able to achieve this. It takes some knowledge of working with audio files and software.Unfortunately, there's no other way to get an organized audio bible, unless you use a website. This is why I knocked one star off of the rating.If you want to do what I did to reorganize the MP3 version, here's how I did it...- I used Goldwave, which is audio editing software.- Set Options -> Storage to use hard drive (not memory), so you can work with large files.- Use Tool -> File Merger to combine all MP3 files into one. My resulting file was 3.31gb in size.- Convert the file from mono to stereo by using Save As and selecting a stereo attribute for your file.- Starting from the beginning of the file, select a portion of it (less than 1/5th), setting your end marker at a silent spot at the end of a chapter. Copy and Paste New the portion you selected. This puts it in a separate workspace. (The reason for this is you can't do the whole file at once, due to the software limitations.)- On the workspace you just pasted new to, use Tool -> Cue Points -> Auto Cue, setting the threshold at -40 and minimum length to 3.5 seconds (the amount of silence between the audio book's chapter separation). This results in a cue list. Split File to split into multiple files.- Verify the split by checking the beginning of each file to ensure it is the start of a chapter. Check the end to be sure it is the end of a chapter. If not, you may have to cut and paste between two adjacent files to fix the chapters.- Rename the files as you work, according to book and chapter.- Close the workspace you were using without saving, since it now resides in the split files. This brings you back to the original workspace. Delete or trim the still active selection.- Go back up to the fifth step above ("Starting from...") and repeat until the file has been processed.

As the other reviewers have said, this book is excellent and truly advanced. Yet, it's not so advanced that an advanced pianist will have to work months on each song. The arrangements have a lot of grandeur, and often flowing sweetness, too. This book is neither a boring copycat of every other book nor a compilation of bizarre arrangements full of discords. It's fresh - incredible to hear and play.Here is a listing of the contents, since I'm sure many would like to know:1. Sweet By and By (5 Pages)2. He Hideth My Soul (4 Pages)3. When I Can Read my Title Clear (4 Pages)4. Heavenly Sunlight (6 Pages)5. I Will Arise and Go to Jesus (4 Pages)6. In the Garden (5 Pages)7. I'll Fly Away (5 Pages)8. There is a Balm in Gilead (5 Pages)9. When the Roll is Called up Yonder (6 Pages)10. On Jordan's Stormy Banks (4 Pages)11. The Old Rugged Cross (5 Pages)12. How Great Thou Art (7 Pages)I would include the keys they are written in, but there is at least one key change in every song, sometimes several. Often the songs have complicated keys (such as 4 or 5 flats) with interludes of easy ones. It keeps the songs interesting.The Old Rugged Cross and How Great Thou Art are very advanced and absolutely thrilling to play. Definitely my favorites!

I absolutely LOVE Mark Hayes' arrangements! They incorporate a lot of great jazz harmonies and rhythms, without EVER losing the heart and sound of the original song. Some of them are CRAZY difficult to play, and take a LOT of work to learn, but the results are well worth it. This book is definitely NOT for the beginner, though. It requires intermediate to advanced skills to play these multi-layered and complex arrangements.I particularly liked the lively arrangement of "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" with a little "When We All Get To Heaven" thrown in for good measure. The wistful "I Will Arise and Go to Jesus" is really beautiful! Really, there is NOTHING in this book that is not simply outstanding!

THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC!I have nearly all of Mark Hayes other books, but this one is definately my favorite. Each piece is so incredibly arranged that it is completely like nothing else you'll ever have played.Note: this book is for ADVANCED pianist. That's mostly why I love it. If you have reached that level, you will appreciate the fact that these pieces require a little bit of practice and present a fantastic opportunity to showcase musicianship and expressiveness.There is not a single piece in this book that I will not perform on Sunday morning. From the beautifully serene "In The Garden" to the spunky "Heavenly Sunshine" each is an instant favorite.The arrangement of "The Old Rugged Cross" is the singlehandedly most unusual I've ever played, and is so moving that it brings tears to your eyes. It starts out with a very Rachmaninoff-style opening fanfare, followed by a solemn and mournful pass through the hymn as interpreted in a minor key. It's very unusual and different. My daughter jokes when I play it that it's probably what it would sound like if Dracula played the piano. HA! It goes on, in the minor key, building to a dramatic climax.....then it's almost like a wave of sunshine washes over the scene and it moves to a beautiful verse with rich chords written in the more familiar major key. It represents the darkness, loss and desolation of the cross that turns to joy unspeakable. I am planning on playing that on Good Friday.The arrangement of "I'll Fly Away" has a ragtime flair that I just love. It starts out with a traditionally-chorded verse, then when you turn the page, all heck breaks loose! Love it!"Sweet By and By" is just beautiful the entire way through. Hayes comments that it expresses what he thinks heaven must be like, and I agree with him. Just beautiful.I could go on. This is one of those books that I'll probably go ahead and order a second copy of because it's already getting worn from me playing through it at least every other day.

As a retired church musician, I have enjoyed playing Mark Hayes arrangements in worship services for years. This book is a great addition to my collection. "How Great Thou Art" is the most challenging, but also the most outstanding selection from the book. The arrangements are written in a variety of styles, with "I'll Fly Away" being one of my favorites. Great writing by Mark Hayes!

If you want advanced music this isn’t it. Maybe intermediate level. I have used two of the songs , received it last Saturday used them in service the next day. I don’t care for some of the arrangements at all , the rhythm is just not right for some of the songs and The Old Rugged Cross in minor key all the way through just doesn’t seem right. I used In the Garden and Sweet By and By during communion , my church is informal during August and I use piano rather than organ . These worked alright for that.

The CD has made it easier for me to learn hymns that I might not be familiar with. It is great just for listening, but I actually use it to help me with timing. It is a valuable tool for me.

Be forewarned, these pieces are very difficult. But if you like a good challenge, the reward is great - the pieces and arrangements are absolutely beautiful.

About the Author

Helen Saberi lived in Afghanistan for 10 years and married into an Afghan family. She has been working for Alan Davidson on his magnum opus, The Oxford Companion to Food, for the last seven years, and has written a number of entries in that book. She has also written papers on Afghan food, traditions and culture for the Oxford Symposium, which she has attended annually for the last ten years. I spent time in Afghanistan and with Afghan people in the US in the 1980's and was so impressed with their food and cooking techniques that it began a life long love of cooking for me. For years, I've simply accomplished some of the recipes that I was fortunate enough to experience from memory. Finally I've found this beautiful book with authentic cooking techniques explained in lovely drawings and descriptive recipes that leave no mystery unsolved. Helen has produced a charming tribute to a beautiful culture that so few these days are open to exploring. I would recommend this book to Afghans born away from their culture and all people interested in amazing food: not spicy, but exotic, rich and healthy. Now I can add some new recipes to my Afghan dinners, but I'll still tell people "I learned this while I was in Afghanistan" just too maintain the mystique!

Marvelous book! Easy-to-use recipes. Wish it included recipes for bolani, but I've found those on-line. On feast days, the local Islamic Center smells amazing. Now I can re-create that in my kitchen!

Sorry folks but I just couldn't find interest in this book. I haven't been enticed to cook even one recipe.

I wish the index of recipes were also indexed in English. I have to scan the entire book looking for what I want!!!! That is not convenient.....

The book club that I belong to tries, for each book, to tie the food we share at our meeting with the book that we're discussing. This month we read The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini, Riverhead Books, 2003 - in my opinion, a terrific book) and I discovered, despite my large collection of cookbooks, that I didn't have any good sources of information about Afghan food. I made do with what I could find on the internet, but at the same time checked out Afghan cookery at Amazon. I chose Afghan Food and Cookery: Noshe Djan, and when it arrived was immediately struck not only by the delightful recipes and excellent writing of Helen Saberi, but by the insights she provides into Afghan culture. Her writing dovetailed beautifully with Hosseini's descriptions of the food eaten by his characters in Afghanistan as well as the circumstances in which it was cooked and presented. I found myself sitting and reading the cookbook as if it were a companion to the novel.For anyone who would like to see behind the scenes presented in Kite Runner, I would recommend Saberi's book!

I was quite amazed to find how tasty Aghan food is, and even more shocked to see the great variety of food that they have. The recipies in this book are very straight forward and surprisingly easy to prepare. It seems to me that a great deal of effort was put into preparing the book because it has extensive cultural notes about the recipies and the country itself.The only gripe I have about the book is that the cover tends to bend outwards really easily and stay bent, but that doesn't subtract from the enjoyment of book.

Quaint drawings and loads of cultural information add to the many and varied authentic Afghani recipes in this helpful book. The author devotes space to helping the reader with unfamiliar terms and ingredients by including a chapter called The Afghan Kitchen. It describes different foods, spices and seasonings as well as techniques. She also writes an introduction which gives information on Afghan culture, traditions and customs. The recipes are easy to follow, delicious, authentic, and most have a little fun fact or helpful tip at the top. Pen and ink drawings are peppered throughout, which gives the reader a peek into the lives of these hospitable and interesting people.

This book is one of the finest examples I've seen of comprehensive cuisine coverage. True, the Afghan cuisine isn't that extensive, the list of ingredients used is short and techniques are simple, but until now, it was impossible to find such an accurate and authentic source of information (even on the internet - try it yourself :-) ).As for accuracy, I've tried 4 recipes from the book so far and they were all at least as good as anything I've had in New York City Afghan restaurants.My only complaint is that there are no pictures at all - maybe this makes the book less expensive, but I kind of like a cookbook to have at least some aesthetic value.
