The MedEdits Guide to the Medical School Interview: MMI and Traditional: Everything you need to know

From the Author

A Conversation with the Author, Dr. Jessica Freedman. What will students learn by reading your book and what makes your interview book different and better than the medical school interview book you published in 2010?. After reading the MedEdits Guide to the Medical School Interview, students will learn a systematic way to approach MMI scenarios that will help them stay organized and on target. We developed this proprietary system based on our years of helping students successfully prepare for MMI interviews. A student will also learn how to navigate traditional questions with ease even when thrown curveball questions. Without being overwhelmed with extraneous information, applicants will be more confident and comfortable walking in to any type of medical school interview after reading the book.Based on the feedback I received from applicants, I knew students felt the medical school interview books on the market were either "too thin" or "too dense." My goal in writing this new 2019 edition was to add guidance about the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) as well as information about osteopathic interviews and how to follow up after interviews. These topics were not covered in the previous edition of my medical school interview book. I also enhanced other sections of the book based on feedback from applicants.Knowing that medical school applicants often feel overwhelmed, I wanted to distill out the necessary information every student needs to do well on the medical school interview whether a traditional or MMI medical school interview. I want students to be efficient in how they prepare for interviews since time is so precious. I also know that throwing out tons of information that is difficult to synthesize can actually undermine a student's performance. The MedEdits Guide to the Medical School Interview is meant to serve as a stand alone resource.Tell me about yourself.Hah! That is one of the most popular medical school interview questions! And, it's often the scariest one for medical school applicants. I was on faculty at the Icahn School of Medicine for over ten years. At Icahn/Mount Sinai, I served on the medical school admissions committee, was the emergency medicine associate residency director, designed and taught medical student courses, worked on hospital committees, practiced emergency medicine in two of the busiest hospitals in New York City, and evaluated medical students and residents throughout my career. I left Mount Sinai to practice medicine in the community and founded MedEdits Medical Admissions (mededits.com). MedEdits has evolved since its founding and I now have a stellar team of former medical school faculty, a talented group of professional editors and have also brought on junior faculty to work with us. As part of my academic mission, I try to write as much as I can. I find that medical school applicants benefit from straight forward guidance that allows them to be prepared and confident but not overwhelmed. MedEdits has helped hundreds of students get in to medical school through our advising, document review, and mock interview services. In addition, we have also nurtured numerous medical educations through the four books I have written about the medical admissions process. Why are you the expert on medical school interviews? Not only have I interviewed medical school applicants as an Icahn/Mount Sinai faculty member, but, through MedEdits, my faculty and I have worked with hundreds of students. I know what works and I know what doesn't. I know how much information a student needs to do his or her best and I know how much information might stress a student and jeopardize her success. Through our work helping students prep for the MMI, MedEdits has developed a proprietary system to approach any MMI scenario with comfort and confidence. The framework, which is easy to employ, will enable the medical school applicant navigate any possible scenario. How much should a student practice for medical school interviews? It really depends, but, knowing when you have practiced enough is key. Some students do better with three mock interviews while others need only one. I was recently working with a student who, after one mock interview, I advised to stop practicing. He was well prepared, could articulate his responses beautifully and I knew additional mock interviews might undermine his authenticity and make his responses sound rehearsed. The practice questions in the medical school interview book will allow any student to practice independently. What do you enjoy most about writing and helping students? That's an easy one. I love helping students achieve their dreams. Here are a few testimonials that have made my year:AJ:"I want you to know that you and your team made my dream come true. When you sit down for Thanksgiving, please feel good in knowing that you made a difference in my life and put another person in the line to becoming a physician. This message is coming straight from my heart and I hope you continue doing what you set out to achieve. Please let your team know that they make a difference."SS:"Thank you so much for turning such an unlikely candidate into a medical school student; I know my essays/activities were not easy to edit by any means and it was with the clarity and purpose you brought to my writing that made me an outstanding candidate. I will never take this acceptance for granted nor will I ever cease to work on being more humble, more knowledgeable, more driven, more excellent for my patients, so that I may be an outstanding person in order to be an outstanding doctor. Thank you again!"PT:"A major strength of MedEdits was that it gave me confidence in my interviewing skills. After last cycle, I was very concerned that I was not presenting myself well at the interview stage. However, in my practice interview, my confidence was re-established. I was not prepared for every question she asked. However, rather than being concerned about giving the perfect answer, by just giving an honest one, I found that my immediate and honest reply was effective. Having an experienced committee member tell me that my interviewing skills were excellent re-established my confidence. This was transformational when I showed up to interview and was thrown several curveball questions; rather than worry, I just gave honest answers in an unassuming way."      LT:"MedEdits gave me assurance that I was taking the correct steps throughout this elaborate application process (primaries, secondaries, thank you notes, follow up calls, etc). It is very easy to doubt yourself after you submit a secondary or after you interview. However, knowing that I was guided by your expertise allowed me to sleep through the night comfortably (most nights). This is the reason that I would say ALL students can benefit from MedEdits admissions advising and editing services. I don't think anyone looking from the outside can begin to understand the amount of stress this application process produces. While it is still stressful, having an experienced team of professionals on your side I am very grateful for everything you all have done on my behalf."Is there anything else you want to say?Of course. We are always looking for feedback from students. If anyone has suggestions on what we can offer students, please let us know! Visit our website, mededits.com, and drop us a note!

Aside from the fact that there is clear advertising for the company she works for, Dr. Friedman fails to adequately equip you for the medical school interview. The tips are sometimes not only uninformative, such as dressing nice and being polite, but they often become detrimental and unrealistic. There are trite phrases or ideas that should never be used in a medical school interview. My favorite gem was that you shouldn't ask anything of the interviewer when they ask if you have any questions because you've already done extensive reading on the school and know everything there is to know. I think that makes you seem either arrogant, crazy or actually disinterested. There is often plenty of information not to be found on the school website that you should ask. I think this piece of advise even contrasted with a different piece she gave at a later point in the book. Dr. Friedman may have served on numerous committees to interview medical school applicants but I'm not sure she can accurately articulate what it was that made quality candidates.

This book provides easy to understand and highly useful advice on how to maximize your interviewing skills for any interview format. There are sample questions and answers for traditional interviews along with a simple and sensible approach for handling MMI scenarios. It's a must read for medical school applicants!

This is a little larger than a pamphlet and didn't gave anything I couldn't find in a web article. Much better books out there in my opinion.

Good book, easy and short read, and found it pretty helpful when applying. On a scale of 1-10 w/10 being the most helpful, I'd rank it an 8. It definitely helped me better formulate and polish some of my answers

Very basic. No insightful new information. Minimal coverage of actual interview questions and answers

If you are looking for a student friendly guide to interviewing for medical school - this is it! Every detail is accounted - this is insider knowledge of the process! Extremely helpful, especially for those who do not have a pre-medical specific advisor or office at their school.

For the most part this book is useless. It's is very short, it takes about 20-30 minutes to read and most of the info can be readily found on-line or by speaking to experienced people. In addition, many more schools are moving to MMI and the book does not provide any detailed info on this style of interview.

The Crook and the Crown Fit for a Princess OH MY NEPTUNE! QUEEN Edwina sent her own royal carriage for us!” Pearl squealed. Shelly Siren and her friends Pearl, Echo, and Kiki stood outside the Trident City People Museum as a large killer whale stopped beside them. The orca was pulling a sparkling shell carriage. Two tailmen wearing bright-blue coats with silver sashes lowered a glittering step from the carriage onto the ocean floor. Another tailman, also wearing a blue coat, but with a gold sash, said in a loud voice, “Princess Shelly, it would be my honor to escort you and your servants to Neptune’s Castle.” “Hey, we’re not her servants!” Pearl snapped. “It’s all right, Pearl,” Kiki said. “Let’s just bubble down and enjoy the ride.” Pearl stuck her nose up in the water and frowned at the tailman but didn’t complain anymore. Shelly hugged her grandfather good-bye before floating up the carriage’s diamond-covered stairs. The inside was just as beautiful as the outside. Blue gems lined the ceiling and the seats. Shelly could see her reflection shining in the walls. “Ooh,” Pearl said, running her hand over the jeweled seats. “I’ve heard of this. It’s aquamarine and very rare in the ocean.” She turned to Shelly. “This is a carriage fit for a princess! Good thing you are one!” Shelly smiled, but inside she sure didn’t feel like a princess! Still, her great-aunt was Queen Edwina of the Western Oceans, and that made Shelly royalty. As the carriage sped away, Shelly waved to Grandfather Siren until she couldn’t see him anymore. Then she sat back with a sigh. This was it! She was actually going to visit Neptune’s Castle—the palace named for the very first king of the sea. When the queen had suggested that Shelly bring her friends to the castle during a school vacation, it had seemed exciting. Now it just felt scary. Echo pushed back her dark, curly hair and turned to Shelly. “You’re so quiet! Are you feeling all right?” Shelly shrugged her blue tail. “I’m just nervous about visiting the castle. I’ll be meeting all my cousins for the first time.” Even though her mother had been a princess, Shelly had only recently found out she was royal. Her parents had died when she was just a small fry, so Shelly had been raised by her grandfather in a tiny apartment in Trident City. She had never met her royal family, except for Queen Edwina. “It’s natural to be a little afraid,” Kiki said. “But we’ll be with you the whole time.” Shelly smiled. She knew her friends would do anything to make the visit a success. Pearl shook her head, and her long blond hair swirled around her. “There’s nothing to worry about. We’re going to a castle! There will be parties and everyone will want to meet us. They’re going to love me—and you, too.” Shelly nodded and tried to act happy. But inside, her stomach felt like it was full of butterflyfish. After all, she’d much rather play on a Shell Wars team than wear a frilly party dress. And she wasn’t sure if she could do the things a princess was supposed to do. What if she wasn’t royal enough for her relatives? Shelly’s thoughts were interrupted by a squeal. “Sweet seaweed!” Pearl gasped. “We’re being invaded!”
