Joshua A. Douglas is a professor at the University of Kentucky College of Law. His most recent scholarship focuses on the constitutional right to vote, with an emphasis on state constitutions, as well as the various laws, rules, and judicial decisions impacting election administration. He has also written extensively on election law procedure. He is a coauthor of an election-law case book and a coeditor of Election Law Stories, which tells the behind-the-scenes stories of the major cases in the field. Although he never uses the term, Milton Friedman would probably be considered a libertarian with his view of a very limited Federal government. The main responsibilities of the Fed would be establishment and enforcement of laws, resolving property rights and maintaining the monetary system. Mr. Friedman considers himself a defender of `classical' liberalism which is essentially the liberalism of the 17th century that concerned itself with the distribution of power, protection of property rights and freedom of individuals.As the heir apparent to Fredrick A. Hayek, Mr. Friedman takes up the battle against socialism, central planning and the concentration of power. Unlike his predecessor, however, Milton Friedman is extremely specific about the changes he would like to see in the way the U.S. government governs. He would like to see the elimination of rent control, minimum wage, the FCC, Social Security, most business regulations, tariffs on imports, public housing and national parks. Friedman was also an early proponent of school vouchers. In fact he goes so far as to call for the complete `denationalization' (privatization) of public education. The main thrust of Mr. Friedman's argument is that when the government attempts to solve social problems through central planning it invariably causes more problems than it solves, restricts individual freedoms and consolidating power in central planners.There is an almost mystical reverence in this book for market forces and their ability, if left alone, to solve practically any social ill including racism. The problem is that Friedman presupposes that business will be forced to act in a rational and benevolent manner in order to maximize profits and survive in a competitive marketplace. Unfortunately this is often not the case. Businesses in the south were more than willing to forgo money offered by blacks. As a pro-business liberal Mr. Friedman sees regulations that force shops to hire blacks as unfair and damaging to those businesses that "[serve] a neighborhood inhabited by people who have a strong aversion to being waited on by a Negro clerk". However, Mr. Friedman's argument can be turned around as unfair and anti-capitalistic to blacks who offer their services and are denied based on race. This would apply to anyone barred from the marketplace, not just blacks.Milton Friedman is so pro-business that he advocates a complete elimination of corporate taxes. In his mind business owes nothing to society and even says, "there is one and only one social responsibility of business - to use its resources and engage in activities to increase its profits". He then goes even further stating that, "Few trends could so thoroughly undermine the very foundation of our free society as the acceptance by corporate officials of a social responsibility other than to make as much money for their stockholders as possible". Not only does Friedman encourage unbridled greed he makes it the number one corporate responsibility in order to protect "free society". Once a person accepts that the relentless pursuit of self interest is the best thing a person can do for society he or she can justify just about anything.One part of the book that seems particularly dated is Friedman's claim that Capitalism reduces wealth disparity. In fact he holds up the United States as a model for wealth equality. If only this were true. He completely ignores the real and growing threat to freedom brought on by the concentration of wealth because he doesn't see it as a problem. The average voting age citizen is welcome to vote for whichever party they choose at which point the parties in power will adjust policy to the needs of wealthy donors. The Bush administration has turned this it into an art form. Friedman also expresses concern that, "a large fraction of the public scrimps in their productive years to provide themselves with a higher standard of living in old age than they ever enjoyed in the prime of life". Mr. Friedman should be pleased to know that 40+ years after the books publication a large percentage of American's have more debt than assets.

This early work of Friedman (and famously his wife, Rose) is a seminal book and tutorial about the uniqueness of capitalism, and how that contrast with competing economic models. I think Friedman's writing lacks the punch and humor of his later, more mature work. But for anyone seeking a quick and tidy insight, and a general understanding of why freedom contributes to, rather than detracts from, liberty, this is the place to start. In an era when, wealth redistribution, tax the rich rhetoric, supply side hyperbole, and embraced deficits, are in vogue, Freidman tosses the baby out with the bath water, in arguing that the only responsibility of a person in a capitalist society is to earn as much as his thoughts and energies will allow. And in so doing improve the lot of all. He also argues rather brilliantly, that underclasses who come to embrace entitlements instead of opportunity are selling them selves and society short, as settling for a handout is nothing compared to the rewards and example, of rising on one's merit. Finally he demonstrates how collectivist society's come to be riddled with inefficiency, plagued by corruption and leveraged towards elite's at the expense of individuality, and the right to live as one see's fit.

A surprisingly in-depth look (for such a short book) at various market factors that capitalism affects and is affected by. I didn't expect to find any justifications for ANY government intervention in the market, but Friedman spells out many situations that he feels it would be justified, how it would affect the situation and what the alternatives would be. On the whole, this is an expertly written treatise on free market economics, or as free as rationally viable (given the political climate of the time).

This is an old text, written in the 60’s, and a lot has since changed and therefore some is out of date. Regardless, there are many good points. i.e. corporate tax reduction, part of the suggested licensing changes, some on market intervention. But holistically this book espouses laissez faire economics and close to a 100% and unregulated free market. It certainly makes you think, but accepting it holistically would be catastrophic and ridiculous. Reading it today provides a great economic history lesson, tremendous food for thought and many good ideas, some of which should be implemented.. This is highly recommended reading!

A rational and well thought out view on the value of free markets and voluntary exchange for modern economies. With today's shift toward bigger government and ever further redistribution, Friedman's ideas are more important than ever. Economic decisions made by a society of individuals is what allowed the US become an economic powerhouse, not a government induced separation of work and reward. Bernie Sanders would NOT approve this message.

A man who knew all the arguments for real capitalism. Kind, persuasive approach attracts interested listeners, deep understanding of benefits of real free markets. Highly recommended for millennials who lean toward socialist theory, wrongly assuming that socialism means "sharing".

Nearly two decades before Free to Choose hit the air (and bookstores), Milton Friedman laid out his "classical liberal" ideology in practical terms, addressing concrete policy issues. Obviously some of the topics addressed are no longer relevant today - the gold standard was dropped nine years after the book's publication - but Capitalism and Freedom remains a standard for libertarian political philosophy. I just had to use that phrase outside of the online game I play most days. But it is true. He was a baddie. And this book uses that as a back drop to the story of our two heroes. It was a very good book. Well written and I always like a fiction book that hangs nicely to a historical peg.I would recommend this book and the author. I started this series out of order but hope to read the first book soon. I like how the series isn't 1, 2, 3 but almost contemporaneous with each other. I've ordered number 3 as well.

This installment of Elizabeth Moss's sexy Tudor trilogy features Susannah Tyrell (sister to Eloise from the first book) and Hugh Beaufort (a friend of Lord Wolf, Eloise's husband). And if you read the first book and thought Eloise was a stubborn heroine, well that's only because you haven't read about Susannah! She puts a mule to shame - but in a delightful, sexual tension-building sort of way.Susannah is desperate to escape her father's plans to marry her off to an old (read that literally) friend of his. In a mad-cap plan, she dons boy's clothing and runs off to seek shelter with her sister in London. Of course, things don't go according to Susannah's plan and soon she needs rescuing. Enter Hugh Beaufort, sent to find Susannah by Lord Wolf. The two immediately clash - Hugh likes his women pliable and obedient, but Susannah is anything but! My MusingsI read Wolf Bride about six months ago and totally fell in love with that book. When I saw Rebel Bride was available on Net-Galley, I immediately requested it in exchange for an honest review. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this one as much as I did Wolf Bride. While the story is as well-written as Wolf Bride, I did not like Susannah very much. One of the things I liked most about the first book was the intrigue within the Tudor court. That was another thing missing in Rebel Bride.When Susannah finds out her father is determined to marry her off to his elderly friend, she runs away and becomes lost in the woods. When two men discover her and take her to their overlord, he is determined to take her virtue, which puts her in a very dangerous situation.Hugh Beaufort, a courier for Henry VIII, is sent by Lord Wolf to find his wife’s unruly sister. He had recently met Susannah under less than desirable circumstances. But, nonetheless, he would do his duty.When he finds Susannah, he does not know whether to spank her for her willfulness or love her for her feistiness.The pacing is steady and the vivid descriptions of the scenery and the court are well done. The story line is interesting and the sexual scenes are definitely erotic. If I had liked Susannah’s character, I would have enjoyed this story more.Susannah’s character is willful, immature and cannot make up her mind. One minute she wants Hugh and then the next she does not. I find it difficult to believe that a genteel young woman would make the choices Susannah makes. She is her own worst enemy. I became quite irritated with her throughout most of the book.Hugh’s character also had some issues. While I did like him, I had a difficult time with the way he took her during their first sexual encounter. The scene seemed forced by the BDSM element, and while I do realize this is supposed to be erotic, for me I like a bit more emotion written into the sexual scenes. I will say, Hugh had the patience of a saint with Susannah, not sure why he fell in love with this extremely immature young lady.Nonetheless, I did enjoy the historical detail, just would have enjoyed a bit more of it. This is an okay read, just not riveting like Wolf Bride was. That book may have set the bar very high. I am glad I took a chance on this one because I got to see more of Wolf and Eloise. Am very impressed with the level of detail in this book. Am not that impressed with how the ailments are organized, but I'll get used to it. Regarding the use of EOs in treating cats: according to EO practitioners and vets, essential oils are NOT recommended for treating cats. Their livers can't process them properly. Certain flower essences are recommended instead. Garlic is also not good for cats. So one star off for not reliable information regarding animals. But for human issues, I'm referring to this book often.

I'm not really sure why this is not showing a verified purchase, I bought it on amazon and paid full price...... anyway....... I purchased this book mainly for its blends. The essential oil and carrier oil profiles are just a plus for me. I like that this book has many chapters. It has many seperate sections, and it has a lot of information! It has over 800 essential oil blends, which I am very happy about, as it's why I ordered the book. The carrier and essential oil profiles are good, and I like that there are carrier oil profiles, instead of just essential oil profiles. There is also a lot of information in this book for using essential oils with children. I have an 18 month old daughter and I always seek the natural route first. I love that she has the blends organized according to ailment. There is a great section on skin care and hair care with essential oils and carrier oils, as well as insomnia, the two sections I have personally found most helpful so far. I have made several blends based on her information and all have been wonderful! There is also a section all about hydrosols and profiles for hydrosols. And there are even cooking recipes for using essential oils in food! I have been using essential oils for 10+ years, so this book was purchased for a bit of inspiration for blends. Now that I've stated the positives, here are the negatives. There are reasons I gave this book 3 stars, first because I am not thrilled with how thin the pages are (slightly thicker than Bible pages). It makes it harder to flip through the pages quickly, and I feel I have to be very gentle, as not to tear the pages. I also didn't see any rare oil profiles and I was very surprised there was no oil profile for or mention of moroccan blue tansy essential oil. I use this essential oil quite often and I would have liked for it to be used in some of the blends. This book came highly recommended by my essential oil supplier and I can see why! It does have a lot of information! But I would prefer more in depth information, honestly. I can see this book getting some use in my home. I have many books on essential oils and I'll add this book to the collection. I have included a photo so you can see how thick with information this book literally is! UPDATE: I wanted to update my review. I'm a little annoyed with the organization of this book. I also do not like the fact that many of the recommendations of carrier oils and essential oils for skin and hair, are extremely general. For example; every carrier oil is good for All Skin Types! There is not one carrier oil that is not good for all skin types! She does not give any absorption rates or comedogenic ratings for carrier oils. I've started to notice parts of this book that are lacking, and I would have thought being an edited version and the 25th anniversary edition, that this book would have more depth, better editing, and more organization. I'm a bit irritated now that I've had more time with this book and prefer my other essential oil books for reference. My favorite authors are; Julia Lawless, The Encyclopedia of Essential Oils (my go to quick reference), Robert Tisserand, Essential Oil Safety (he writes the book on essential oils!), and Kurt Schnaubelt, The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils (thats his newest one, it is a wealth of knowledge) and my absolute favorite: Perfume and Flavor Materials of Natural Origin by Steffan Arctander, a classic that will probably never go out of print. I feel there are better choices as far as essential oil books go other than this book!

For many, this is the preferred reference book on the topic of essential oils. This book is informative and thorough. It's clear and concise. You will find yourself referencing it again and again. It's chock-full of recipes and long-standing remedies. One of the reasons people love this book is because the author is practical. She was an expert long before the essential oil craze. She wrote this in a simple clear-cut manner without any hype. Honestly, if you like essential oils you will appreciate this book.Additionally, this is the newer edition; it's the one you want. I'm very fond of this book. It's a treasure.

This is about the KINDLE edition only. I have a print copy of her first edition and loved it. I was hoping to update and what I saw, I liked a lot. I usually read on Kindle so was shocked to see that many pages were simply dropped out. A large number of the recipes for blends consisted of a single letter per line, when they were included at all. AMAZON, please re-do the kindle edition or take it off your list. I've requested a refund and ordered the print version.

Excellent reference. Tells me everything I wanted to know about essential oils and answers questions I hadn't even thought of yet. I have a fairly extensive collection of books on the subject but I won't need them any more.

Exactly what I was looking for! This book comes with tons and tons of recipes. I believe it has over 600! There is so much great info in this book that I couldn't possibly cover it all here. So you will just have to buy yourself a copy to find out! 😜 It does talk about different ailments and it will give you essential oil recipes. It teaches you a lot about essential oils so it is definitely great for a beginner. What I love most about this book is that I can look up an ailment in the back and it will send me right to the recipe I need to remedy it. I think this would be great for people who have a hard time sitting down and reading a book. It is also just a great reference to have if you are in a rush or just for everyday life! I highly recommend this book and I'm so glad that I purchased it. The price was great as well.
