I'd never heard of author Nina Revoyr til I read a review of her newest novel, "A Student of History" the other day. The book - perhaps a Gatsby-lite tale - sounded interesting so I downloaded it. A short 240 pages, the novel takes us up Bellagio Drive in Bel Air to the rarefied world of the WASP super upper class. This group is the descendants of the original settlers - the Dohenys, the Mulhollands, the Chandlers, etc - who had made their money in oil and land investments like orange groves an d property development. This group tends not include "new money", like the members of the entertainment industry. You won't find many, if any, Jewish or Hispanic names among these members of the Los Angeles Country Club or the attendees at fancy museum galas. One of the most important members of this upper-upper class is "Marian W", whose grandfather made a vast fortune and passed it along to his son, Marian's father. Marian W lives at the top of Bel Air, in a compound of houses. At 75, she still participates in social activities.Invited into this milieu is Rick Nagano, a late 20's graduate student at USC. He's taken all the courses for his PHD (in history) and is working on his doctoral thesis. He's recently broken up with his girlfriend and is literally drifting though life. Rick is hired on by Marian W to help with her memoirs. He's from a working class family and has risen above his family in education level. Rick becomes a protegee of sorts to Marian W and is introduced into society, while being placed at a back table at the luncheons. She gets him kitted up in the right clothes and other encoutrements to make him more presentable. Rick also meets - and falls hard for - Fiona Morgan, a married woman a few years older than him.Nina Revoyr's book is a look at how a well-meaning young man gets involved with a social group well above his own and how his own values suffer. No one, including Rick Nagano, is a saint but the deviousness and venality displayed by members of Marian and Fiona's group is astounding. Rick's story is told in rather flat prose, which is the way it should be. With a little imagination you may be able to turn the story and characters into a police report.Revoyr's a powerhouse story-teller. I want to read her three or four previous novels.

Thinking back after I finished the book, I realized how much Revoyr’s ultra wealthy characters shield themselves by walls. Richard’s patron, Mrs. W__, lives high up on a Los Angeles estate so large and secluded that nobody outside her circle would even that know it—and she—were there. When Richard is introduced into that circle of old money elites, he soon learns that all over the city there are private spaces hidden from view of the hoi polloi, so that members of the circle don’t have to interact with regular people. There are even walls within walls. When Richard attends an outdoor charity function and becomes overwhelmed by the spectacle of excess and waste, he slips through an ornamental hedge. Only on the other side of that hedge is he able to have a conversation with a normal person. And, not surprisingly, there are figurative walls; the barriers of privilege and influence that ensure the members of the circle will not have to suffer the legal and other negative consequences of their actions.Richard, once allowed behind these barriers learns that they are also a form of quarantine, because there is a sickness of the soul that has infected the members of the circle. In this short, searing novel, we see what happens to Richard when he is exposed to that sickness. This is not a pleasant story, but it’s keenly observed and memorable. This would make an excellent book club read for both its literary merits and its thought-provoking depiction of our modern era of financial and social inequality.

I started out really liking this book. It's a fun if not too difficult to solve little mystery that peels back the curtain on L.A.'s uber-wealthy and makes some valid points about class and race in the process. The book is largely well-written.So don't get me wrong with what I'm about to write. I enjoyed the book. It was good. But it could have been great if not for the clichés.First off, the uber-wealthy women who populate the book are all of a type – unnaturally thin, over-modified and not very nice. They certainly don’t reflect the diversity of women who actually attend charity functions in Los Angeles.Worse, the book is written from the POV of a male character who repeatedly makes comments about how "natural women" (i.e., with no plastic surgery) are so much more attractive. Take, for instance, these two sentences, both on page 145:" ...a forty-ish too-thin society blonde and a normal-seeming woman of thirty or so...""Sarah was lovier in her natural, unaltered states than most of these fancier ladies."Secondly, the author’s resentment of privilege is palpable. It’s reverse snobbery that wasn’t necessary for the author to make her points.Example: the protagonist, a graduate history student, drives a beat-up old Honda. A valet bringing up the car after a posh function asks a rich woman if it’s her car and the woman gets angry and says "Certainly not." The chef catering a charity lunch tells the protagonist that the guests are horrible people. As if everyone donating lots of money to charity would be awful, or someone working the event would be so unprofessional and stupid as to badmouth the people who hire him.I don’t really want to rag too much on a well-written book about an interesting subject. L.A. comes alive in the pages. So recommended with reservations, as noted.Oh, and side note to the author: Edward VIII was NOT so fat he needed a love chair. That was Edward VII. I’m guessing this was a typo. Flagging it so you can correct it if there are subsequent printings.

I gave The Heiress of Linn Hagh 5 stars because it kept me guessing & re-thinking my own deductions right up to the climax.A book that kept me reading until I could no longer focus my eyes! I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good mystery set in historical times. Enjoy!

I rarely award a 5-star book review -- reserving those for the best of the best, amazing books that truly move me or the occasional gem that makes it to my list of all-time favorites like Atlas Shrugged or To Kill a Mockingbird. While The Heiress of Linn Hagh (and the 2nd book, The Sans Pareil Mystery) don't quite hit those thresholds, they both deserve 5 stars in their own right. Charlton wrote not one excellent mystery, but two. They are, by far, among the top 5 mysteries I've read in the past few years, and I hihgly recommend them to anyone who enjoys mystery books. When I purchased this one, I expected it to be a fairly predictable, simple mystery (not sure why, but that was my expectation). To my pleasant surprise, it pulled me in and kept me reading late into the night. Both novels are intriguing, engaging and feature a surprising number of plot twists. This case, in particular, has one piece that makes it seem impossible to solve (how did the heiress get out of her locked tower bedroom?) The characters are intelligent and likable. Anyone who likes mysteries should read both of these books. I can't wait to read more from this author!

This is the first book of a relatively new series of period-piece British mystery novels. It is well written and entertaining. The book’s story is placed in the first decade of the 19th century in England. It is centered around the work of the somewhat enigmatic police detective Stephen Lavender and his jovial side-kick, Constable Ned Woods. They are based in London, but not infrequently they are sent into the English hinterlands to solve particularly difficult crime mysteries. In the example of this book, they are sent north into rural Northumberland. The author has done an excellent job of researching the time and place settings for her story, and she writes in a captivating style which is sprinkled with now archaic English words, which were in common usage 200 years ago. With more lucidity and realism than most, the author does not gloss over the unpleasantness and challenges of both urban and rural life in pre and nascent industrial societies of our forebearers. For example, she refers to the smells and health risks associated with large amounts of animal feces in urban streets and markets when most transport was horse drawn, and the pollution of the Thames River. The writing employs a pace and complexity which holds the reader’s attention, and for me at least it became a real page turner. A personal quibble with this book is that I thought that the tangential referral to Lavender’s love interest was an unnecessary diversion, which distracted from the quality of the central story. However, subsequently, I have been somewhat chastened, as it turns out the woman plays a central role in the next book in the Lavender mystery series. This book is a good contribution to the genre of period-piece British mysteries.

I only started to read this book because I didn't have time to start a new series, and I didn't think I would be continuing beyond book 1. What a pleasant surprise to enjoy this book so thoroughly. I loved Detective Lavender and Constable Woods. Their relationship and the dialogue was well written and humorous. The mystery held my interest from beginning to end. I loved the relationship between Lavender and Magdalena and thought it was poignant and sweet. I just finished book 2 and am looking forward to the next book that is due on August 30. Karen Charlton is an excellent writer and I plan to read all of her books. I didn't want to start a new series, but her books are too compelling for me to stop now.

I wasn't sure at the outset that I would like this book, set in England in 1809. The author's use of the common vernacular of the time put me off initially, but I came to actually appreciate her efforts to be realistic. London detective, Stephen Lavender, and his constable, Ned Woods, have accepted an assignment to search for a missing heiress in northern England. What a cast of characters they encounter along the way as they travel by coach and four, and when they arrive at their destination. This book has it all: the heiress's loving aunt and great-uncle who are trying to find her, the evil step-siblings who may or may not be involved with the disappearance, the colorful local folk who hang out at the tavern where Stephen and Ned are lodging, and even a band of gypsies thrown in. Lavender's investigative intellect reminds one of Sherlock Holmes, and Woods contributes to their efforts as well. I was able to predict some of this tale's ending, but not all of it. If you enjoy a period piece of intrigue, mystery, and some drama thrown in along the way, then you will enjoy this book. Although I was doubtful at the start, I rated this novel 4 stars and have already started the sequel, The Sans Pareil Mystery.

This book had an excellent plot. The author kept the action going and left enough clues so that the reader could guess some of the outcome. However , the book was riddled with historical inaccuracies. First of all she used the expression "stake out" when Constable Woods was doing surveillance. This expression didn't come into existence until the 1940s. Another issue is the missing heiress' fortune. Her grandfather was described as a man of "vast interests", but her fortune was only £10,000. That wasn't a pittance, but it wasn't remarkable either. In Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Mr. Willoughby jilted Marianne Dashwood for a woman with £50,000. Willoughby's income of £600 per year from his estate was inadequate to the lifestyle he was leading as a bachelor. The interest on £10,000 would be between 400 and 500 per year, depending on how it was invested. There are other examples, but I won't make this into a laundry list. Suffice it to say that I won't be.buying the next book in the series.

Roget's International Thesaurus, 7th Edition

From the Back Cover

A classic reference book that has been used by millions all over the world, Roget’s International Thesaurus is the product of more than a century and a half of continual expansion, reorganization, and improvement. Today this book is not only the most time-tested and bestselling thesaurus ever, but, newly revised, it is also the most up-to-date and comprehensive reflection of the English language as it is currently used. The revolutionary achievement of Dr. Peter Mark Roget’s first edition in 1852 was the development of a brand-new principle: the arrangement of words and phrases according to their meanings. Dr. Roget’s system brings together in one place all the terms associated with a single thought or concept; it allows a wide-ranging survey of language within a book of relatively modest size, without the space-consuming repetitions that so severely limit the scope of thesauruses arranged in a dictionary format with A-to-Z entries. This brilliant organization makes Roget’s International Thesaurus both the most efficient word finder and a cutting-edge aid in stimulating thought, organizing ideas, and writing and speaking more clearly and effectively. This revised and updated seventh edition features thousands of new words and phrases, including the newest slang words and expressions that color and inform everyday language. At the same time, it retains all the hallmarks that have made Roget’s International Thesaurus the most popular word reference book next to the dictionary.

#68,017 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am an English language teacher. I purchased this book for three of my students and myself. I use it practically every day. At first, it is a bit daunting trying to use it, because it is not organized like other Thesauruses. However, took the time to look it over and discovered a huge index in the back, listing the words in alphabetical order. The front half of the book is organized by theme. These two options for looking up words is brilliant. Have you ever tried to think of a word and said, "It's right on the tip of my tongue!" You can't think of the word, but you know the topic or theme it's related to...you pick up Roget's and look at the theme organized section, which is not alphabetical. Another day you know the word, but want a synonym or antonym for it. You go to the back half, alphabetical Index, and find the word. In both cases, there is a reference number to locate the section with the info you need. Did I say, "I love this book!" My English learners (intermediate to advanced) are able to use the system. It's a great way to build up their vocabulary knowledge without having to dig around for challenging sentences. It's a great conversational tool also. It's density allows for a challenging experience for anyone with any purpose. Challenging, but fun and productive.

Purchasing a new thesaurus is fraught with peril! My 1968 Roget's Pocket Thesaurus crumbles into dust. Now on my desk - a 1983 Roget's Pocket Thesaurus, edited by Mawson, and Roget's International Thesaurus 7th edition (2010), edited by Kipfer. Thankfully, each has an index and preserves Peter Roget's schema of 'biological classification'. Each of these versions has its uses. I more often reach for my 1983 pocket edition because it's handy, literally. The Kipfer is also very good and clues one in to contemporary usage; but at five times the size. If you habitually care for words, there's no grief in having two or even three treasure troves. I also confess to having a Pocket Oxford American Thesaurus 2nd edition (alphabetic form); also truly useful but not truly pocket sized. You could lose yourself in any of the three, especially while writing the paper due in the morning. If I were choosing just one thesaurus to get lost in, my 1983 would win. But combining two attributes - humanly pocket-sized and categorical schema - made for a long search. I waited several months before a never-used 1983 pocket text showed up for sale. You probably want a new thesaurus before old age ensues. As to just one thesaurus, I suggest without hesitation the Kipfer Roget's International Thesaurus 7th edition. Buy a bigger book bag.

The depth and diversity is remarkable. The arrangement allows the writer to browse through a vast array of related words and in the process helps to enrich one's own thinking about the shades of meaning that would best suit the sentence one is trying to craft. I use the word "craft" deliberately because it would not be as useful for those who want to crank out rough, good enough writing -- which includes me, most of the time. It is for those who appreciate the richness and subtlety of the English language. My only disappointment is that I wish I were able to load this onto my laptop. It is a big book and so one is not likely to put it in one's backpack and bring it to a coffee shop, which is where I like to do a lot of my writing.

I had to update an old (1963) thesaurus. I do a lot of technical writing and using synonyms often helps to keep the writing and references clear. I purchased the Oxford Writers Thesaurus and Roget's 21 Century Thesaurus to start with and neither really were much help. The Oxford thesaurus is a beautiful book and very easy to use but would only provide synonyms for the primary and at most secondary definitions for a word. While Roget's 21 Century Thesaurus was much better in getting me to the right word, the pages are so thin and the print is so small that it was just a pain to work with.So I got the 7th edition of Roget's International Thesaurus and I love it. It covers words comprehensively, provides me with plenty of ideas and choices and is easy to use and read. Please note that this thesaurus is organized with the old style word index/category structure instead of the dictionary structure. I don't mind it, but I know many people don't like it.For $20 you get a thesaurus that is larger, more comprehensive, easier to use, and easier to read than the other thesaurses out there. To me this was a no brainer.

Still the best. Roget's two step method is by far superior to a "dictionary" type listing method & certainly better than online searches. With Roget's, the words are classified according to subject matter. To find a word, you look it up in the index to find the different subjects it is listed under, giving you the various nuances of the word. It is not as difficult as it sounds and after you use it a few times you will wonder why all thesauri do not follow this pattern.
