"Planet Law School II" by Atticus Falcon is a thorough examination of how to succeed in law school. The book goes through a step-by-step analysis of the 1L year and how to succeed. From there Falcon describes the professors, 2L/3L classes, summer associate positions, the bar exam, and everything in between. This is the most exhaustive "how-to-succeed-in-law-school" book that exists.However, Falcon often goes on long, and completely unnecessary, rants. The book could be cut down to ~400 pages and contain the exact information present in his 830 page tome. Many of the rants are only marginally relevant and could be included at the end of the book (ex: Popov v. Hayashi.) Other rants are the size of an entire book and could be entirely omitted (ex: CH26.) The first ~300 pages are especially relevant to 1L's, although very repetitive, with ~100 pages of the rest of the book being good for 2/3L's.The best part about "Planet Law School II" is Falcon's constant referencing to other popular "how-to-succeed-in-law-school" books. Chapter 16 provides a thorough list of supplements all students should read before law school. In later chapters he expands this list to include books on legal research, logic, style, and arbitration."Planet Law School II" has its faults but overall is well worth the effort. I will personally try Falcon's method and reply to this review within a year on the value of PLSII.
First and Foremost: This book can be used as a proper tool or a MAJOR depressant. Used in the right way with the proper rationalism and thoughtful assessment, a person can gain a great deal of information and wisdom. Read at face-value and only focusing/remembering specific parts of the book can greatly bring down a person's morale. Some of the purported flaws of this book include burnout from the work, too long, uninformative/useless all have their basic grounding from various people both experienced and inexperienced in the land of law school. All these have their grain of truth and flaws, AND all these can be used to perpetrate already existing dispositions a person has regarding the proffered work.After scouring a vast amount of pre-law books, reading endless forums, and talking to a few people I know, the final conclusion on whether to do 0L prep or not is: it depends.It depends on your personality, your true assessment of your intellectual capabilities, and whether your psychologically prepared for the rigors of law school.For example: If a person didn't do so well in undergrad and the LSAT and barely got into a decent law school, that person could justifiably be anxious about what will happen to him regarding grades. With dwindling job prospects, fiercer competition, soaring tuition, and a known penchant for laziness, it would be very prudent for that student to do everything he/she can to ensure they do their best. 0L prep may or may not provide actual substantive help (in my opinion it does), but at least that person would have the psychological relief of knowing she's doing all she can to improve her future (provided she doesn't burn herself out). In this regard, PLSII is by far the best pre-law book out there. On the other hand, if a student skated by undergrad and got top grades along with an excellent LSAT score and he firmly decided to devote himself to law school (once he starts attending), then it would be ill-advised for that person to do substantial 0L prep.So bottom line is this: Give yourself a real and honest assessment of who you are and what you know you can do. If you feel you may be a bit underqualified for law school or very nervous, and know some 0L prep will at least alleviate your nerves, then by all means go for it. If your very confident in your abilities and have a track record to substantiate it, then ENJOY YOUR SUMMER! Go out and make it as memorable as you can, and at the very least don't spend it on forums and review pages talking about how much people don't need to prep. People are different in their our own ways.
I'm very satisfied with the book.It advises you on all necessary steps in order to achieve good grade in a law school. Plus, it tells you how to work hard before, while, and after the school to pass the Bar. Specifically, it tells you specifically what materials you need, schedules, etc. I wish I purchased this book earlier. You can buy most of the materials here, on Amazon.By the way, it costs almost nothing (4-5 gallons of gas nowadays) to get your questions answered. Should you follow the advice from the book and start learning and practicing early enough, I think the first scholarship will cover expenses.Please be advised that it is not a panacea (an answer or solution for all problems or difficulties). You would have to formulate your own opinion as to what to do and when to do.In my view, It is a must have investment in the school to formulate your own opinion and to become successful.
