The introductory chapters on retention, band broadening, and resolution not only are a must read but will be returned to many times. The sections on instrumentation, detectors, columns, and data handling are still useful, but are dated. This book could greatly benefit from a second edition, to include updated detection and column methodologies, as well as hyphenated techniques. As such, because it is not a cheap book, it is probably not the ideal textbook. However, academics, industrial practitioners, and anyone who is seeking either basic or advanced SEC info will probably find what they need here. It should also be mentioned that the treatment of solution thermodynamics (i.e., the combined effects of solvent and temperature on dissolution and dilute solution properties) is above average for an SEC text. Highest recommendation.

I really wish I had read this book before visiting Venice. That said, Madden provides a fascinating and detailed biography of Venice, his emphasis on its unique place in European history as a republic and as a center of commerce and capitalism hundreds of years before the rest of the Continent adapted these ideas. The unique relationship of Venice with Constantinople and its place as a major medieval commercial center are the primary foci of the book. It is at once entertaining, informative and insightful.This high praise aside, there are two issues I took with Madden's writing. The first is the almost unapologetically Venetian view he takes on Venice's role and place in Mediterranean politics. I cannot imagine a historian of Genoa (Venice's Italian maritime rival to the west) having the same attitude and coming to the same conclusions about Venice's role as Madden does. Similarly, Madden's treatment of the Fourth Crusade, if not a white-wash of Venice's role in the sacking of Constantinople, than something close to it, was a bit much for my tastes. Admittedly the Byzantine Emperors were often some shady characters, but as Madden writes it, the Venetians were wholly unsoiled of any wrongdoing. The second issue I have is with its lack of detail since the Napoleonic age.Some allowance can be made on this point, as Madden's area of expertise is the Middle Ages and Early Modern period; still, given the depth and fascinating details of the birth and growth of the Venetian republic, I had anticipated the same of his coverage of Venice in the 19th century: its relationship to the Habsburgs, the unification of Italy, the "Italia Irredenta" of the early 20th century. Instead there is an almost maudlin tone as Madden seems to grieve the decay and collapse of the once-great city, only to be imagined (and reborn) as a tourist haven and "Disneyland for adults."In the final analysis, though, I loved the book. The history is terribly interesting, and the minute details of the city, its architecture and art are information I wish I had before I visited. Alas, it seems I will have to return to that magical place now armed with an eye for the history hidden in plain sight. A highly recommended read.

So glad I read this book prior to a trip to Venice. Fascinating history of the city that is intertwined with the history of the world from the Fall of Rome to the 1800s. Very approachable book with the right amount of detail. I learned a lot about Venice and the Byzantine empire and made me wanting to read more about a number of the subjects.

This book is a well-written narrative of the story of Venice, from its mysterious origins as a swampy refuge for citizens fleeing barbarian invasions during Rome's collapse to the controversy surrounding advertising on scaffolding in Piazza San Marco in 2009. It is a story that directly connects antiquity to our present day, and is told in an interesting and entertaining way. I would highly recommend reading this book before visiting the city, or if you are interested in understanding how a truly unique city-state republic turned maritime empire was able to function and thrive for nearly 1000 years, despite being surrounded by barbarians, kings, and empires, and despite being built on marshy islands with no fresh water and limited agricultural land.

Amazing story of even more amazing city state come empire. A very well informed and balanced historical look on Venice and republic, on its people, free of husks of misconceptions and legends and reputation opinions and politics. Striking contrast with what I have read to date. Very well written, still perfectly scientific book, takes you through centuries of a republic with no other polity to match. Excellent reading that stays with you for a long time after you finish the book.

I liked everything about this book. I went to Venice and found it unlike any other city. The people, the places, their way of life is very different. I decided to read about what makes a Venetian and Venice so charming and yet so uneasy. Well, you'll find out! These are very resilient people, they were ship builders, the original bankers (fascinating story of how the name "bank" or "banking" came to be. They were at the top of their game and then found themselves at the bottom. They are merchants for sure, don't mess with their money. Highly opinionated, ruthless when they have to be and yes, all this things... but they are very charming... I can't wait to go back to Venice!

This book is written by a highly reputed historian however, his narrative is amenable and easy to read. The author weaves cleverly a story of the key events that made Venice a wealthy and stable Republic that lasted for 1000 years. I highly recommend this book to anyone that would like to go slightly deeper into Venetian culture and history, and not just over the surface of Venice's touristy-romantic facade.

I had visited Venice in 2015 and was searching for a book with more detailed information about the places I had visited and seen. This book fulfilled my expectations. I felt as if I were transported back to the days of Venice's evolution and development. Although I am more a right brain person, I particularly enjoyed the description of the development of currency, banking and so on. It was fascinating. I highly recommend this book and the author.

I was first off put by the tittle containing the word "Alpha". I've come to associate that word with the cheesy "pick up artist" community and "neck beard" types. However I gave it a shot. It's a pretty quick read with straight forward, realistic, advice which is appreciated. Most of the rules are geared to help your dating life and to help you become a better man in general. I only found a couple rules to contradict themselves or be too generalized. Still, well worth the read and I think I'll find myself reading this one every few weeks to refresh myself.

Easy to read ensemble of guy-wisdom collected from many sources. Written like a recipe collection but with themes, principles and personal examples for illustration. Author has the integrity to give credit to every reference and quote.It's a well written back to the basics practical guide.Good for newbies, anyone who wants to revisit their game, or those who are re-entering dating market. I'm in this last category.The only reason I didn't give it five stars is the price. Of course, value is in the mind of a consumer. For me, $4.99 would have been a fair price as compared to similar content on Amazon.

David wrote a great book. He has run down the set of principles needed to live life properly as a man. The book covers all areas of life and does so quickly and efficiently. It is just the right length and presented well.There are one or two disagreeable points, such as "dont seek a girlfriend" (so as not to get tied down -- i would disagree with this being the characteristic of a real man); but overall you'll benefit from this book.I dont know of any other like it.

As a woman, I enjoyed the book. Straight forward insight in a easy to read format (I read the book in under an hour). Obviously the picking up women information may not apply, but otherwise I did come out the other side with some solid take aways.

(The good news from Thompson is that I’m not alone.)The question of what drives hitdom can be esoteric to the point of incomprehension when the psycho-sociologists wrestle with it, or dry as burnt toast when the statisticians do. Thompson, however, addresses the question anecdotally, using facts and figures to fill in the blanks. The result makes for very relatable reading.As a sexagenarian who lived in China for much of the last decade I have to admit that some of his cultural references were totally lost on me, but that’s certainly not the author’s fault. We learn at many levels concurrently and this book taught me a lot.I particularly liked the section devoted to the debunking of the myth that anything really goes viral on the Internet. It makes sense. Far better to be friends with Kim Kardashian, if you want to be famous, than it is to think you’re going to come up with the world’s cleverest meme.And someone finally gave us the full story on the historic success of Fifty Shades of Grey, although he kept to the marketing issues and wisely didn’t try to explore the deeper issue of why that content was so enthusiastically received. And, yes, I did read it. As a devout reader I felt I had to, given its incredible success. That, too, was predicted by Thompson.If you are trying to market yourself as an artist or author Hit Makers is a must read plus. It’s filled with money quotes. Here’s one: “Publicly, people often talk about issues. Privately, they talk about schedules. Publicly, they deploy strategic emotions. Privately, they tend to share small troubles. Publicly, they want to be interesting. Privately, they want to be understood.”Following the laws of Pareto, authors typically spend most of their time on the first and last paragraphs of a book. Between those bookends, some books start strong and lose steam. Others pick up momentum as they go. This one follows the latter trajectory and is well worth the reader’s investment and patience.

Interesting read and it certainly had some insights. Worth the effort for anyone marketing/selling products that need to stand out in a world of competitive and similar items, i.e., books, music, movies, etc. Could have benefited from tighter editing; the book tends to ramble a bit, never seems to present a definitive approach to maximizing one's chances of having a hit. Granted, it's a soft and squishy target but the author would have done well to bring his discoveries together into a "best practices approach" to maximizing the chances of success.

The first 3 chapters of this book were good and got me hooked (particularly about industrial design with Raymond Loewy and speech-writing with Jon Favreau). However, the first 3 chapters pretty much said it all. I particularly enjoyed chapter 2 on Raymond Loewy, his story was really fascinating, and I do wish that the author had devoted even more pages to this famous industrial designer (likely this chapter appealed to me because of the engineering aspect--yes, that "familiarity" or “aha” moment). The rest of the chapters were pretty much a rehash and overemphasis on concepts already introduced in the first 3 chapters.Around chapter 3 though, the book started to be less interesting (except for the part on speechwriting).The other reviewers who mentioned that the book seemed to heavily emphasize on the music industry were right. The book had a mix of too much detail/minutiae devoted to people in the music industry and certain songs (certain paragraphs would be listing song after song after song). And then the book would sometimes have stories that just didn't have enough detail (see paragraphs below). I would’ve actually liked to hear more about Savan Kotecha! And I’m not a music person, but it sounded like that his story had an interesting beginning, and we just didn’t get to read the complete story. It almost appeared that the book was made up of a collection of the author's notes taken on interviews that he had with a person.However, most of the topics—save for the first two chapters—are severely lacking in critical analysis. That I would have been fine with—since some authors prefer not to influence the readers—but then at least present the full details of each story that is being told so that the readers may decide for themselves how to analyze the situation. But this story appeared to be trying to do too many things at once, instead of focusing on being good at a couple of industries.Like the ESPN example the author gave in his book, he should focus on trying to be very good at a couple things than trying to hit a bunch of different industries. My suggestion for the author would be to refocus his attention on the two areas that he emphasized heavily on—namely, screenwriting, songwriting, and news media (my personal preference would have been an emphasis on engineering and science, but the author’s coverage of the entertainment and news media industries makes it seem like he’s more comfortable with those areas).I was very interested in the chapter concerning why certain books are a hit—like Fifty Shades of Grey—and I loved the part dedicated to John Snow on epidemiology with regards to analogizing “viral” outbreaks with popularity/broadcasting. But again, the examples seemed to be lacking in sufficient detail to tie it cleanly in with what might’ve caused that “viral” popularity. We can only rely on the author’s assessment of the situation to provide any sort of guidance on that; but readers are not provided with enough data to determine whether his assessment appears to be fairly accurate or not.Another example: why mention that Microsoft hires the most anthropologists behind the government, and then not even mention about how those anthropologists are used in Microsoft’s research? Again, an unfinished storyline.And as a side note, I really did not like the interludes. They were just not that interesting at all, and added almost nothing of value to the book (though the interlude on how teenagers’ brains are really hardwired differently, which explains why their judgment is bad, was an interesting note).Overall, the book seemed to be a collection of unfinished thoughts and storylines, or some stories that just dragged on too long, or just didn’t provide enough research data for the reader to be able to make some type of independent analysis from it. It’s a shame, because the author appeared to have spent a lot of time interviewing people and doing a fair amount of research, but just couldn’t quite figure out how to put all the pieces together into a cohesive analysis or writing. A good effort, and the first 3 chapters were worth reading, but the rest of the chapters were a little too drawn out to explain simple concepts.
