light, middlebrow journalism, like 2 dozen Psychology Today articles cobbled together. And obsolete. Lots of egotism, condescension--talking down to the reader, and covert aggression. Jumps lightly thru subjects, spending two pages or so on jokes, Shakespeare, swearing, curious facts on the level of "Eskimos have 30 words for snow". i bought this book based on the high opinions on this page and was disappointed

"Word Play" is one of the few books that has stayed in my memory for decades. How many works of nonfiction actually provide useful ideas that you find yourself using on a regular basis? You know how it is, a book may be interesting for the duration of time in which you're reading it but not long after it dissipates from memory and eventually winds up being sent to the thrift store. Not so with Peter Farb's perennial from 1973."Word Play" inadvertently wound up being my introduction to the psychology of linguistics. How do these differences in language influence the way we perceive the world around us? Examination of such models becomes one of the most fascinating ideas touched upon in "Word Play".In recent years linguistics has become a hot topic due to the purveyors of neurolinguistic programming, but Farb's work preceded that trend's ascendancy. Its anthropological approach makes it more engaging than most of those works that focus on diagnostics or detailed structure of language.The first half the book was spellbinding. Once I got the point, the second half amounted to more of the same and I came to the conclusion that I'd already gotten from the book what I'd intended. Nevertheless, this is one of a dozen or two books that has found a permanent place in my library.

I teach English as a Second Language in Taiwan. Unlike most books about linguistics, this book helped me understand "what happens when people talk", and that has made me a more effective teacher. I re-read it several times a year to keep its insights fresh in my mind. Each re-reading reveals new depths of understanding. In spite of being almost 10 years old, I still regard as the best of its kind.

I'm thinking about getting a little pet, possibly a dwarf hamster, so I got this book. It has sections on "Introduction to Dwarf Hamsters," "Before You Buy," "Understanding Your Dwarf Hamster," "Accommodations," "Feeding Your Dwarf Hamster," "Health," "Raising Dwarf Hamsters," "Species-Specific Breeding Facts," Breeding for Coat Colors and Textures," and "Information."Having read this 110 page book with loads of cute pictures of hamsters, I'm now certain that a Dwarf Hamster would be a good pet for me, and I know what species I want, what gender, how many, what sort of a hamster-house I need, what to feed them, how to handle them, what sort of care and cage-cleaning I'm in for, and what not to do with them. In other words, I'm all set.I would recommend you buy this book BEFORE you adopt a dwarf hamster, because you will be all set up for the little fella BEFORE you bring him home. Works better for you and the hamster.

I just finished reading this book from cover to cover. Loved it. I got it because of the great reviews, and because I got a dwarf hamster for the first time, and had only had the classic Syrian hamsters as a child. The author did a great job about giving details for each species of dwarf, as opposed to talking about them as one homogeneous group, like other books. They really do have their differences. I'll let you read the other reviews to see more about all that the book covers. It seems geared towards the adult or older teenage pet owner, though you can probably tell that from reading some of the pages in the "Click to Look Inside" Amazon feature.I think one important thing the reviewers haven't covered yet is the author's credentials. You can read them all on page 111 when you do the "Look Inside". Go to the back cover first, and then flip back a few pages. In short, the author has a D.V.M (Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine), and a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Univ of California at Davis. Dr. Vanderlip has "provided veterinary care to exotic and domestic animal species for more than thirty years...authored twenty books on pet care....served as Clinical Veterinarian for the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine...." [on and on], has served as Chief of Veterinary Services for NASA, and even does seminars. Not only that, but apparently her husband, who is "an expert in laboratory and exotic animal medicine" has also helped her obtain recent scientific info. The book is copyrighted 2009 and 1999. So, yeah, it seems pretty darn up-to-date.

What makes a good book about hamsters? Lots of PICTURES. And this book has plenty! Cute little dwarfies smiling, dancing doing back flips, playing basketball and being cuuuute! Photographs, not just drawings. I think the best part of it is that the only hamsters that are drawn are the sick or injured ones. That way you never get to see an actual hamster in bad condition. Photos of animals that have been injured can be disturbing, especially for dwarf hamster-obsessed people like me. There are like 4 or 5 drawings only, and LOTS of photos. Tons! I love this book!Even though it's pretty thin, this manual is close to complete. It focuses on the everyday pet owner, not just on breeders. There are not too many home remedies, it mostly recommends taking your pet to the vet. The section on recuperating a lost hamster is smart. Valuable information. It doesn't go too technical but it tells it just like it is. No kiddie speak. Also, most of the hamsters pictured are gray, just like my own Campbell's dwarf. That has made the book so much more enjoyable. There's a section on how to distinguish between 4 types of dwarf hamsters.Get this book! You will want to eat it!

My hamster loving son loves the photos. I like all the information AND the photos. A very informative book. Who knew that there is such a difference between dwarf hamsters and regular hamsters. I just thought that the dwarfs were a smaller version.

I had hamsters for many years, and i am not saying this to brag. i know a lot about hamsters and some small details there are not entirly true. for example, it says that you should never put a hamster in a ball to run. i disagre but part of what they are saying is the reason is true. read the book to know the reason. overall, the book is ensecure, but nice. but if you buy it dont follow everything they say or just buy some other bookl. again this is only my opinion.

I love this book. Before we got a dwarf hamster, we did lots of research and this book was a great addition to usual internet searches. Great information on the different varieties of dwarf hamsters readily available. We were able to go to the pet store armed with knowledge (you never know if your pet store's staff are truly knowledgeable or not). We decided on a Winter-White dwarf hamster and just love him. I'm sure we'll continue to reference this book as questions come up.

Weiss's spirited prose keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat while recounting the ratification of the19th Amendment. Although 26 nations had already granted their female citizens the vote, it wasn't until 1920 that MOST American women could partake in national elections.In 1848, Seneca Falls, NY hosted the First Women's Rights Convention. Based on the Declaration of Independence, the attendees drafted 8 sentiments of equal rights that women desired. It was a man, Frederick Douglass, who urged the Convention to add a 9th sentiment: the right to vote. Douglass asserted that true citizenship could not be attained without the right to the ballot. With this, the Suffragette movement in the USA was born.The Susan B. Anthony Amendment (#19) passed by one vote in both houses of Congress in 1919. Within a year, a two-thirds majority of the existing states needed to ratify the Amendment i.e. 36 states. By June of 1920, 9 states rejected the Amendment, 3 states refused to even consider ratification, and 35 states ratified the Amendment. (The reader will be amazed at which states voted no.) The fate of women's suffrage was left to ratification in the Tennessee legislature. The author introduces fascinating details about the many players in this drama: Tennessee politicians, Republican and Democrat, a sitting President and candidates running in the 1920 Presidential election, Anti-Suffragettes and Suffragettes. (What a shock to learn that both Eleanor Roosevelt and Edith Wilson were on the side of the Anti's!) Many of the Suffragettes had earned their political chops as Abolishionists. They were fighting for the vote for all women regardless of race. Anti's raised the alarm about the dissipation of state's rights and the polluting nature of politics on motherhood and southern family life. They preached to the prejudice against Negro women having the vote. Tensions mounted in the Tennessee summer heat, as both sides exhorted to lies, influence peddling and bribery. By whom and how were legislators in both Tennessee houses influenced? The vote was a cliff hanger!Ten million women voted for the first time on November 2,1920, but two states denied black women the right to vote. From Boston to Orlando, barriers were created to prevent black women from voting and some blacks, men and women, were killed in their attempts to vote. In Chapter 23, entitled Election Day, Weiss chronicles the delayed suffrage for other minorities in America. She highlights the current political efforts to disenfranchise blocs of US citizens. The battle for the ballot, begun so long ago, rages on.

This would be a good doctoral dissertation because it is meticulously researched but it is so detailed as to become mind numbingly boring. In the end, I could only skim it. I stumbled onto interesting parts but most of it just wasn't. The main take away is that we are still living through the same attempts to limit the vote much of it on the basis of race.

This was a thoroughly-enjoyable book. Weiss’s prose really breathes life into history, so much so that you feel like you really understand what makes so many of the women and men she writes about tick. Weiss also does a nice job of applying an intersectional and critical lens to the history of women’s suffrage. It was fascinating to read about the deep and complex relationships between Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony in particular. I found it a bit spooky (and comforting?) to learn just how closely the US political and social environment in the early 1900s parallels where we are today. Down to a 1920s Kellyanne Conway(!). It was so powerful to come away with a sense of just how many women have contributed (and continue to contribute) to the advancement of women’s rights since the birth of our nation. I feel more connected to the ongoing American story than ever before. After reading this book I purchased 10 copies for girlfriends of mine. It is an absolute travesty that women are essentially erased from the American historical narrative. If we actually learned the full story of America during our civic lessons in school, we’d be a much better nation for it.

The author's exhaustive research was obvious. She introduced us to some truly committed and courageous individuals who paved the way for all women in this country. Because the reader knows the ending, however, the details become somewhat cumbersome and will have a tendency to skim which is unfortunate.Most interesting was the interplay between the civil rights goals for blacks and the demands of the suffragettes. It seems like women's rights have always taken a back seat throughout history. A continuing struggle even in the 21st century.

I bought this some time ago but chose to read this now as a nod to Womens History Month. It summarizes the American suffrage movement and specifically focuses on the battle in Tennessee to be the 36th state to pass the 19th amendment in 1920, the last state ratification needed to add it to the U.S. Constitution. I found it a useful read as it reminded of the nexus between the abolition, temperance, suffrage, and progressive movements for much of the latter part of the 19th century. Sadly, it also tells of the internecine battles these movements had and the racism cynically invoked to further their own agendas. Still, a worthwhile if not an exceptional read.

What a never-give-up fight! What persistence, bravery, and, at times, humiliation, women suffered for MY right to vote. An exciting book which makes me appreciate the foundation that we have been given to make progress in the fight for all people who are not white male to have the rights to reach their potential, to live their lives as God intended. Fabulous book, and, believe me, it is not a “dull” history book!

One of the most exciting books I've read in recent years, even when I already knew how it ends! Although I knew the amendment did get ratified, things definitely did not look good and I couldn't figure out how they were going to pull it out. What a wonderful story that everyone should know. Normally, I find this kind of book that has one big idea, an ideal candidate for skimming. There is often a lot of filler, and a tendency to pound away at that one idea until the book has reached an acceptable length for commercial publication. Alan Alda's book has the one idea, that we have to relate to each other in order to communicate, and then he embroiders on that theme for the rest of the book, but it is so entertaining and chatty, that I enjoyed it well after buying into the big idea. He uses examples from sociology and psychology studies as well as from his experiences as an actor. Nicely done!

5++ starsEvery single person on the planet should read this book. Alan Alda (who is a phenomenal writer) has written a highly informative book about the importance of communicating better. He then goes on to provide innovative and creative ways to help people do so. He is a natural storyteller, and the book is so entertaining that I completed it in one evening. Alda uses miscommunication stories from his own life to demonstrate how important it is for people to understand each other, and the issues that arise when we don’t. A major focus of Alda’s is teaching empathy. Relating to others creates empathy, and from there the desire to understand and cooperate is born. He also focuses on improving communication through listening with our eyes, using a story to make a point, eliminating confusing jargon, and paying close attention to what the other’s person’s face is telling us.If I Understood You is one of the most informative and useful books that I have read in a long while. After I finished it, I immediately emailed my daughter’s teachers suggesting they use it to support a creative combined math and science class that she took last year. I also think the techniques will help me with my own relationships, including my husband, children and friends. I highly, highly recommend this book to everyone. This book would make a great gift, and our world (and particularly our country right now) would be such a better place if everyone followed his ideas. Who knew that Alan Alda has been involved with teaching scientists and doctors to communicate with the rest of us since - well, at least since 2009, when he founded the Alda-Kavli Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook?Not me. And I'm delighted that he has, and even more delighted that he wrote a book about his efforts.As a teacher, coach, and consultant on topics of communication, conflict transformation, and empathy, I *really* appreciate Alda's insights as well as his tips and techniques, many of them learned through his days as an actor and in working with improvisation. I've happily adopted some of his ideas into my own work (with attribution, of course), and plan to explore the ideas of improv in the near future.This is a fun AND informative look at what it means for all of us to communicate better - not just scientists or medical folk - and includes suprisingly easy and remarkably powerful experiments and practices that are helpful for anyone seeking to be a better, more empathetic communicator. Which, in this era of so much upheaval, really ought to be all of us.

I attended a play with Mr. Alda some years ago when he played Richard Feynman. He was magnificent conveying a lot of the spirit of the real man. Alan Alda is no scientist and he will assure you of that fact. But, he has the ability to communicate as he demonstrated for over a decade presenting science innovations. This book attempts to talk about what it is to communicate ideas in the terms that Mr. Alda understands. That is, through improvisational acting tools. Some critics of this book dislike that approach to communication. The tools are not as meaningful to non-actors.Thus there are some negative reviews. I am more positive about the principles presented by Mr. Alda. He understands the problems with crossing disciplines and has some useful guidance for people.

I really enjoy every book that Mr. Alda has written, including this one. I found it very profound, and thought-provoking. I think it resonated with me more because I am also working on my MBA and my current class is communications. I was especially drawn in with the topics of empathy and dark empathy, but the one quote that has stayed with me is "if we're actually able to get inside someone's head, it's not a good idea of being guilty of breaking and entering." Mr. Alda shares his experience and knowledge and his own journey of relating and communicating. I am truly interested in learning about his experiences, and I'm glad he shares them.

It was "eh". There were parts I loved, but a TON of repetition and quite a bit of rambling about personal feelings. I was determined to make it to the end (and I did), but I was on (audible) 2+ by the end of the book because I was getting bored. It's not that long a book... It's not a book I would ever read again, I did regret buying it instead of checking it out from the library.If you like Alan Alda, it will probably be a fun read for you. The one good thing I got out of it was the use of improv to improve communication and reception skills so it's not 100% without merit.

This is a great book, an easy read, funny and quite informative.One has to understand though - this is NOT a strict GUIDE about how to get better at communicating.This is exactly what is said on the cover: Alan Alda's ADVENTURES (read - "experience") in the field of good communication.The book touches upon many topics that explain good communication and ways one can achieve it, the studies that were done, the insights professionals have. Again, this isn't a definitive guide, but it gives very good food for thought!I've read it once through and want to go back the second time to read and this time - take notes.

This is a gem of a book for the variety of examples of manuscripts. I bought it 2 years ago and refer back to it repeatedly, browsing, and enjoying the reproductions. Some of the colour is off a bit, some examples are very clear with good colour, being able to see some of the brush strokes if your so inclined to the study of illumination. A good buy for the price.

This book fulfilled all my hopes. It makes me hungry of seeing the originals, to buy something so deliciously done. It shows with grace and information several of the most exquisite illustrations from books of hours of our ancestors. We often call the middle ages a time of darkness and ignorance. But certainly in those times some of the most exquisite and perennial works were done, and I am thinking also about cathedrals, and others of the same kind. I thank the authors and Amazon for making this available at such small prices. Why am I not giving the topmost classification? I just would like to have it more and more of the same. So keep giving us more of the same, and some kind of Manual about these kind of works and authors, and about the art of doing it. Congratulations!

Although the introduction is well worth reading, this book is more about high quality reproductions of stunning images from one of the highly decorated illuminated manuscripts. It may not have a huge number of images, but the quality and complexity is such that I highly recommend this book for people who want to stare at something extraordinarily beautiful.

I feel very proud to have it. I use it to show-off with my friends who are dying of envy! Extraordinary edition. Love it.

So this isn't quite what I thought if was. I thought it was a prayer book with the illustrations, and instead it has a small quote and an illustration on each page. Looks nice, it's very small, not very thick. Wished it was more like the historical book of hours. But it was still neat and the images do look very nice. It's a hard back book as well

While French artist Jean Giraud was already a well-known comic artist with his hard-boiled western series Blueberry, he built an entire second career under the pen name Moebius beginning in 1963 with a series of short stories. This is a collection of the stories that form Jean "Moebius" Giraud's Edena (or Aedena) epic - really the adventures of interstellar mechanic Stel, as it kicks off with "Repairs," a psy-fi short unconnected to "Upon a Star," the one-off commission for Citroen that wound up becoming the beginning of the epic. Some time after the private publication of Upon a Star, Giraud decided to develop it into a kind of extended parable inspired by the ideas of his guru, Jean-Paul Appel-Guéry. Despite a New Age/Back To Eden orientation the stories have moments of the kind of off-the-wall and satirical situations for which Giraud was famous.I got the hardbound, which has an integral cover (i.e no dust cover): all the art is beautifully reproduced and there are a couple "extras" - short comments by Giraud that introduce the work and preface each chapter (note that these are mostly different comments from those he provided for previous publications.) A one-page biography of Giraud and a select bibliography end the volume.Stel is a pilot and mechanic from an advanced civilization who is supposed to be travelling to a "Jalopy" show on a distant planet with his partner Atan. Affected by a mysterious force, Stel discovers that apparently he alone can activate an ancient technology that transports him, together with Atan, to the legendary planet Edena, a supernatural paradise. Disconnected from their artificial life support systems, the pair develop into man and woman, whose natural physiology and impulses dismay Atan, the female. There is a more mystic aspect to the situation, however, as in a significant dream Stel meets the mysterious psychopomp Master Burg and is attacked by an evil entity. Atan flees from Stel and the separated pair experience symbolic adventures in which they must deal with the artificial civilization that the evil entity has created. Submerged in a dream state by the entity, Stel struggles to be united with Atan, but can he succeed in reality?I like this series a little better than the "Incal" series Giraud did with Alexandro Jodorowsky; the latter is pretty heavy-handed at times and the New-Age stuff seems trite. Nevertheless the Edena stories are solidly in the same general mold - nature is good, society is corrupt, citizens are sheep, etc. The dark ironies of Arzach and surreality of The Airtight Garage aren't much in evidence, but there is some pointed social satire. The artwork is great, Giraud at the height of his powers.

I was introduced to Moebius way back in 1987 when Marvel/Epic released a nine volume series that included “Once Upon a Star”, “The Airtight Garage”, “The Long Tomorrow” and more. I only got four of the books and until now thought that the series was only six volumes long. It appears that everything in this book was already released in that collection but the only story I already owned was “Once Upon a Star” from volume 1. If you already own the entire Marvel/Epic collection I’m not entirely sure it’s worth buying again. On the plus side the colors are noticeably more vibrant and it’s nice to have the stories collected in an attractive hardbound book rather than the paperback Marvel/Epic series. The story has been relettered and retranslated but when I compared the text for a few pages the differences were so minute as to be irrelevant.The Marvel/Epic collection is more comprehensive than this book which apparently only uses material from volumes one, five, seven, eight and nine and not even 100% of that. “Once Upon a Star” is followed by “The Aedena Cycle” (I assume at some point Moebius changed the name from Aedena to Edena) in the Marvel/Epic book but it’s not included here. If you actually want to get the stories from the Marvel/Epic collection be prepared to pay a lot because based on Ebay sales each volume is going to cost you more than the Amazon price of “The World of Edena”.“The World of Edena” is a science fiction/fantasy story of two friends, Stel and Atan, who, in the midst of exploring space, come across a seemingly barren world, devoid of life except for a single pyramid surrounded by a very large encampment of alien lifeforms. I won’t spoil the story but they eventually end up on Edena which is a thinly veiled name alteration of Eden. I had never read the portion where they arrived on Edena and was pleased to find out that the ambiguously gendered Atan was actually a woman. It’s here that Moebius begins to express his beliefs in instinctotherapy which involved eating “raw foods”. Stel and Atan have been so conditioned by technology including bio-implants and molecularly synthesized food that eating raw foods and missing daily doses of “hormonodes” creates a jarring effect. For one thing Atan begins to become much more feminine and Stel notices but as one might expect this return to nature allows them to be truer versions of themselves.I was drawn to Jean Giraud’s art and writing due to it’s simple, dreamlike quality, It reminds me of the style of fellow Frenchmen Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s Little Prince although a little less surreal. I’m a sucker for back to nature stories and this is now one of my favorites. It has a little bit of the Robinson Crusoe feel. When last I left the story Stel, Atan and countless aliens were being whisked away by the pyramid and now 29 years later I get the rest of the story and I couldn’t have asked for a better continuation. Great collection from a great artist who sadly passed away at the much too young age of 73. Not sure if this would classify as an indictment of instinctotherapy.

Moebius has done a remarkable job of world-building in these 350-ish pages. Worlds-building, actually - worlds within worlds, spirit worlds, and underworlds. And like our own world, it's not the worlds' job to explain themselves, no matter how outrageous they might be. In fact, the last few pages question experienced reality itself.So, if you look for clear motivations, plausibility, and consistency, you might have stopped at the wrong door. But, if you're willing to let this epic sweep you up and follow where it leads, you have an adventure ahead. And, for what it's worth, you might compare this to work by Druillet, another comic artist active at similar times. Under the assumption that you're a Moebius enthusiast, I'd just like to comment briefly on Dark Horse's treatment of releasing this piece stateside. Thankfully they've treated the work with the appropriate reverence and attention to color and detail that such an edition would ideally have. It's a beautiful object and a positive reminder that the digital age of Kindle books will never obsolete such an item.I think a collective sigh of relief can be had that the artist's catalogue is in good hands for future "Moebius Library" releases---which apparently there will be more in '17 and '18!!Keep up the good work Dark Horse and I'll gladly buy each new release.
