The Cost of Living

From Publishers Weekly

The author of the Booker Prize-winning novel The God of Small Things dons a pundit's hat in her second book, and it's an awkward fit. This slim volume offers two previously published magazine articles. "The Greater Common Good," which appeared in Outlook, an Indian magazine, argues against the building of a controversial dam on the Narmada River in India. Roy notes that 60% of the 200,000 people likely to be uprooted by the project are tribal people, many illiterate, who will be deprived of their original livelihoods and land. Drawing on studies and government and court documents, Roy criticizes the World Bank, the Indian government and a political system that favors interest groups at the expense of the poor. In the second essay, "The End of Imagination," a criticism of India's decision to test a nuclear bomb that was published in the Nation in September 1998, Roy asks why India built the bomb when more than 400 million Indians are illiterate and live in absolute poverty. It's a good question, but fully a fifth of the article is devoted to a friend telling Roy that she has become so famous that the rest of her life would be "vaguely unsatisfying"Awhich is a fair description of this book. Roy surely has meaningful things to say about India. But she is not yet nearly as accomplished a political critic as she is a novelist. This effort, marred by general attacks on "the system" and personal digressions that distract a reader from the substantive issues at hand, is cursory and na?ve. That Roy anticipates this criticism doesn't render it any less valid. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

The phenomenal success of Roy's Booker Prize winning first novel The God of Small Things (LJ 4/15/97) has metamorphosed her into an activist supporting unpopular causes. This book consists of two parts: "The Greater Common Good" attacks the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada river in western India, while "The End of Imagination" denounces India's nuclear tests in May 1998. The Save the Narmada movement, a grass-roots, anti-dam movement that has been agitating for over a decade, believes that instead of being a solution to India's water and power shortages, the still-incomplete dam will cause immense distress owing to the displacement of 40 million people, the submergence of 245 villages, inequities in resettlement, and environmental disasters. Roy's polemical tract on their behalf, while not a dispassionate inquiry, raises some important questions about the real price of "development," whether in the form of big dams or bombs. Ms. Roy captures the essence of the technological problems of the planet today. We humans like to think of ourselves as "Masters of the Universe." When, in fact, we are flawed creatures who do things without the wisdom to see the long-term consequences of our actions - be they building a dam or nuclear weapon. It is not lost on this reader, that the "father" of the atomic bomb quoted the lines of Shiva when he first saw his weapon exploded - "I am become death, the destroyer of worlds." We humans are good at destruction; sometimes it even looks like building. While Ms. Roy's prose is a bit less poetic than that found in "The God of Small Things," her passion makes up for the linguistic power. She is calling out the leaders, not only of India, but also of the world, to reconsider the consequences of what they are doing to the earth and its peoples. All of these actions, of course, in the names of progress and national defense. It is not likely that Ms. Roy's writings will change the governments. But perhaps they will open your eyes as they did mine, to the realities of what we are doing on and to this planet. At the beginning of the 21st century we are again looking at the exploitation of the earth that nurtures us to the point where it may no longer support us.

Arundhati Roy is more or less guaranteed to hit below the belt. For an American reader, she is also guaranteed to teach you something you probably knew little about. She invariably does so in a marvelous fashion; her prose is unmatched. If you enjoyed her work of fiction, The God of Small Things, I encourage you to try her non-fiction works. This book focuses on the dams on India; it's a passionate argument against damming and in favor of considering people, all the poor people of India.Roy also discusses India's testing of the atomic bomb, another topic which most Americans probably haven't spent a great deal of time considering. Roy is convincing and writes from the heart in a way very few politicians or politicists do.

Arundhati Roy has a wonderful way of writing. This woman could write about absolutely anything at all and I think I will still enjoy it. She has a naturally earnest free flowing poetic yet precise language. She has the ability to choose her words so well as to get the exact picture or impression she wants us to see. Truly she paints with her words.Roy used her amazing writing skills and sensitivity so very well in her fantastic work, The God of Small Things. Here she uses the same skills and more aiming primarily at her own people asking them to re-examine 2 strongly held views. As non-Indian I thoroughly enjoyed both essays of this book. The first essay deals with the construction of river dams in India since the independence in 1947. Roy set about in a very systematic way to establish the true cost of the dams in terms of human suffering. She focused on one project in particular but her research was wide ranging and indeed she had to dig into several completed projects to establish true benefits and costs. Roy's central message is that the price paid by an oppressed native minority is way too high and the alleged benefits to India are low. Where this essay is truly universal, at least applicable to so many third world countries in the post colonial era, is in its research for a definition for her own country, identity and common good and modes of opposition to this common good! Roy was also highly unimpressed with the western approach to 3rd world development projects but her approach was a times too general and sweeping. The Second article, probably far more universal, is the nuclear weapons article. Roy's analysis of the policies of the Congress party and the BJP nationalists leading to the 1998 explosions shows great insight and clarity of mind. She categorically opposes the bomb as weapon of peace and she totally rejects the overwhelming support of her people for the bomb and the Indian nuclear tests. Having traveled to India shortly after the Indian and Pakistani explosions I was horrified with the attitude of "our bomb was better than theirs" and this is the first work that I personally have seen that takes on this subject with such force. Roy's opposition leaves no prisoners behind. It is hard to overstate the courage of Roy on this issue given the level of tension between Hindu India and Islam within India itself and across the borders.I strongly recommend this wonderfully written book to anyone interested in issues related to regional conflicts and postcolonial development.

Another wonderful book by this author. Strongly recommend you read this . A must read for anyone interested in the future of India and Pakistan . I learned so much from this book .It probably should be used as a text book at the high school or even college level for teaching an international government class . Never have I learned so much about waste in government spending and the negative affects of dams . Apparently we haven't learned anything because China and others continue to make the same mistakes .

I believe I ordered mine as a used but it's great quality and doesn't have any marks inside, which I appreciate.

For $11.99 it is an expensive ebook for $4.99 it would have been affordable. I am saying this as someone who read it and feel not have got the money's worth. There is little in it that cannot be ascertained from reading her other Book 'Walking with the Comrades'. That book is well written and more fact rich all be it the facts in her book are not likely to be independently verified. I wonder why she sticks to narratives which are full of Rhetoric and facts that are difficult to verify. But I suppose facts that cannot be independently verified is better than having no facts at all. In any case this book is not rich on facts about the events that are written about. And besides not everyone is interested in facts.

Great book. My one complaint is the book starts with 1965 and ends in 1990. I know there was no R&B chart in Billboard magazine in 1964, but R&B chart in Billboard goes back to 1940. You could use Cashbox charts for the missing year - Joel Whitburn does in record research books. This book is screaming for a second edition that stretches back and brings us up to date.

A good read - lots of detail.

Welcome addition to any music library!

It went to a friend as a gift

This book was truly beat up and worn out. It looked like it had been abused by a spouse. Coffee stains. GREAT BOOK. The used copy I received, not so much.

"Being With You," the highest charting hit of Smokey Robinson's solo career, was originally written for pop singer Kim Carnes, who had recently scored a hit cover of the Miracles' "More Love." However, when Smokey presented the song to Carnes' producer, George Tobin, he learned that Tobin was no longer acting in that capacity. Tobin, however, saw a hit and in an attempt to show Smokey his good faith in the song, agreed to pay for the recording sessions.Upon release, "Being With You" shot to the top of both the R&B and Hot 100 charts, achieving the top spot in the R&B category. However, the song failed to reach the top spot on the Hot 100 and stalled at number two. What song kept it from reaching number one? Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes."Such behind the scene details form the backbone of THE BILLBOARD BOOK OF NUMBER ONE RHYTHM AND BLUES HITS. From smooth Motown soul to gritty Memphis funk, this book tells the fascinating stories behind twenty-five years of hit singles on the Billboard Charts. More than a mere collection of music business anecdotes, this book also serves as a very readable history of some of the most memorable pop music of this century. Highly recommended.

Review

"Students of econometrics and their teachers will find this book to be the best introduction to the subject at the graduate and advanced undergraduate level. Starting with least squares regression, Hayashi provides an elegant exposition of all the standard topics of econometrics, including a detailed discussion of stationary and non-stationary time series. The particular strength of the book is the excellent balance between econometric theory and its applications, using GMM as an organizing principle throughout. Each chapter includes a detailed empirical example taken from classic and current applications of econometrics."―Dale Jorgensen, Harvard University"Econometrics will be a very useful book for intermediate and advanced graduate courses. It covers the topics with an easy to understand approach while at the same time offering a rigorous analysis. The computer programming tips and problems should also be useful to students. I highly recommend this book for an up-to-date coverage and thoughtful discussion of topics in the methodology and application of econometrics."―Jerry A. Hausman, Massachusetts Institute of Technology"Econometrics covers both modern and classic topics without shifting gears. The coverage is quite advanced yet the presentation is simple. Hayashi brings students to the frontier of applied econometric practice through a careful and efficient discussion of modern economic theory. The empirical exercises are very useful. . . . The projects are carefully crafted and have been thoroughly debugged."―Mark W. Watson, Princeton University"Econometrics strikes a good balance between technical rigor and clear exposition. . . . The use of empirical examples is well done throughout. I very much like the use of old 'classic' examples. It gives students a sense of history―and shows that great empirical econometrics is a matter of having important ideas and good data, not just fancy new methods. . . . The style is just great, informal and engaging."―James H. Stock, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

I had to use Hayashi for econometrics. My econometrics professor did not explain much and always told us to refer to the book.Wow...I still remember the pain. Trying to prove things that almost seemed impossible and stuff that they never taught me in college. To be fair the book is well written. And I confirmed this with my hardcore econ PhD friends. Also, that is why a lot of econometrics professors love this book. However, if you do not have a solid math/ econometrics background then I suggest starting with easier book such as Wooldridge or Cameron's Econometrics book. Then look at Hayashi. Also, it is super helpful if you have a friend that can help you with the math and the proofs. Also, these days, there are lot of Econometrics YouTube videos and other materials online, so you can supplement them. But ultimately, you have to really go through the pain and then you will see the beauty.

Over the past four or five decades, econometric methods have been borrowed and used more or less effectively by social scientists in a broad range of disciplines. Generally, though certainly not in every case, those who use econometric methods in other social sciences are not as well trained in mathematics as economists, and they have little or no knowledge of economic theory. To meet the demand for accessible econometric literature in other disciplines, authors and publishers have produced textbooks that are much less mathematically demanding than the staple sources. Examples include Wooldridge's Introductory Econometrics, Gujarati's Essentials of Econometrics, Stockman and Watson's Introductory Econometrics, and Mirer's Economic Statistics and Econometrics. Also, Peter Kennedy's Guide to Econometrics is an accessible catalog of tests and correctives for violation of assumptions, provided the non-specialists stay out of the technical appendices. However, Hayashi's Econometrics clearly does not belong in the category of textbooks that appeal to a broad-based audience of social scientists. Hayashi, quite rightly, has a different audience in mind, and he assumes that the reader knows and has facility in applying the mathematics that is legitimately expected of economists. He also liberally incorporates economic theory into his presentation. While the econometric texts mentioned above lean heavily on OLS estimators, Hayashi treats OLS as just a special case of the generalized method of moments, a concept that is entirely alien to most students and practitioners who are not well schooled in the mathematical methods of economics. One consequence is that social scientists who are not cautious in selection of self-instructional materials order Hayashi's text and are then dumbfounded when they encounter mathematics and economic theory that they are not prepared to handle. Sure, they could take the time and effort needed to get up to speed, but most folks are in a hurry and have more pressing concerns for released time and sabbaticals.I was introduced to econometrics in an independent study thirty-five years ago. I was assigned sections from the first edition of Johnston's Econometric Methods and Kmenta's Elements of Econometrics, as well as few journal articles, and was then on my own. As a result, I can sympathize with other non-economists' frustration. Johnston and Kmenta may seem pretty accessible now, but at the time they were regarded as difficult. I initially preferred Kmenta because his first edition (as well as his second) did not require practiced facility with matrix algebra. I'm still embarrassed to recall, however, how mystified I was when Kmenta began introducing alternatives to OLS estimators. I didn't know there were any! I eventually learned a lot, but making sense of Johnston forced me teach myself the rudiments of matrix algebra.I know that textbook publishing is a racket, just look at the prices. But I think that publishers have an obligation to very conspicuously apprise prospective readers that a text like Hayashi's understandably makes demands on the reader that non-economists typically will not meet. Otherwise, social scientists who might use applied econometrics in their less mathematically-intensive disciplines will waste money and be deprived of statistical tools they might put to good use.

One of the best books I've ever read. Hayashi explains everything very clearly and never leaves any details out. The end of chapter exercises, especially the projects where the readers works with a real paper and data, are amazing.

Explains things in a way that I can understand - even in the first chapter presents GLS in a very intuatitive way

very classical book~

The modern standard econometric theory is fully covered in this excellent book. I felt very comfortable with the moment approach to econometrics conducted from first to last page. Also the exercises and examples are quite illuminating. You will not regret!

My favorite PhD metrics textbook. It is great for learning as opposed to being a dense reference like Greene. The beautiful typesetting makes it an easy read. And it is so cheap!

Kind-of a dense read, but Hayashi's book was recommended by one of my econ professors.

The book description says the book is the “Salem Witch Trials meets Mean Girls.” It’s one thing when friends or reviews describe a book as a mash-up, but when it’s in the book description itself, I get a little skeptical. But Mean Girls is a viciously funny movie (“Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimized by Regina George?”), and I’ve been intrigued by the Salem Witch trials for most of my life. It comes with the territory when growing up less than an hour away from Salem. I’ve visited Salem several times, and I’ve both been in and directed the play The Crucible. But it was the added info that author Adriana Mather is a direct descendant of someone involved in the witch trials that made the prospect of reading the book even more intriguing. Would she make the book be all the things—funny, biting, satirical, and spooky—implied in that mash-up?Absolutely!The story starts with Samantha Mather—a direct descendant (like the author) of Cotton Mather, a minister who supported the witch trials—moving from New York to Salem with her stepmother while her father is hospitalized in a coma. She moves into the old house where her father grew up, a place where strange, ghostly things start happening. In school the next day, her last name alone attracts negative attention among other students, particularly a collection of four girls and a boy known as the Descendants. Their family trees include ancestors who were accused, tried, and hanged as witches back in 1692. No wonder they don’t like Samantha. She gets bullied, and as a teacher, I was slightly put off by how the school population (students and teachers) is somewhat complicit in the bullying. The school administration and her stepmother chalk it up to Sam’s somewhat troubled past. But this is fiction, and as the plot got more mysterious, spooky, gripping, and scathing, it bothered me less because there’s a really powerful and important message buried inside the intricate, twisty plot. But before I get to that message, I want to talk about the characters and plot.Sam is a great narrator. She’s smart, snarky, and stubborn. She lacks some self-confidence because of all that’s happened to her, but she’s also got a strong sense of what’s right and wrong. As her situation at school gets worse, and she is ultimately accused of being responsible for some freaky and dangerous things happening at the town, all she wants to do is help everyone by solving the problem—a curse on the descendants (including herself) of those involved in the witch trials. The supporting cast is also well-developed. I like that the Descendants have distinct voices and personalities, and Susannah—the first to reach out to Sam—was my favorite of that bunch. As in many YA books, there’s a kind of love triangle with Sam and two boys: sweet, noble neighbor Jaxon and proper, mysterious Elijah. I only loosely consider it a triangle, and it was never a distraction, but it was quite the contrary, as both relationships were different, unique, strong and necessary to the story. There are at least two big mysteries, and it was fun watching them converge and diverge throughout the plot. The stakes are clearly raised through the book, and though I sniffed out the ultimate villain, that villain’s true motivations surprised me. I didn’t want to put the book down when I had to, particularly through the climactic confrontation. What elevates this book toward best of 2016 status is the message. Sam is trying to stop a curse that has been repeating itself in Salem since the witch trials, but the unsubstantiated finger-pointing that occurred then has repeated far too many times in history. Whether it was the “Red Scare” of McCarthyism in the 1950s (the inspiration for Arthur Miller’s The Crucible) or the profiling of different ethnicities in many eras of history including the present, the hysteria is unnecessary. And it happens in high school also if one “popular” group of students socially banish others for no reason other than they’re different. Even without witchcraft, this happens, and hopefully well-written books like this can help point out why that’s dangerous while doing so with an enjoyable story too. This book exceeded my expectations, especially after reading a few books that didn’t. Maybe my reading dry spell was a curse, finally broken by How to Hang a Witch and its FIVE STAR rating.

Just finished Heather B Moore's Condemn Me Not: Accused of Witchcraft so I thought I'd give this book a try. Both were priced right for an introductory read of a new author. At least they were new to me. And both were written by descendants from people at the actual Salem witch trials. I guess that was another thing that drew me to this book. I have to disagree with the reviewer who complained of the plot. I thought that was one of the book's strong points. The story was very well told, logically moving from one episode to the next. At least it kept my interest, but maybe I'm too easy.Another complained about repetition which probably was a just complaint. It was the same kind of event--a confrontation or rejection or supernatural experience--from chapter to chapter, and Sam the protagonist's reaction was pretty much the same from chapter to chapter. Kind of reminded me of Book I of the Quijote where the Don moves from chapter to chapter getting beat up but still moving on unaffected, whereas in this book Sam gets scared or rejected and is still pretty much the same person she was at the beginning of the book. But the book doesn't pretend to be high brow literature, but neither does the Quijote for that matter. Both are stories well told with twists and turns to keep the interest going. The Sancho Panza here is a very polished ghost who's pretty much taken in stride.Chapter 30 explains how the ghost does some of his supernatural stuff, a delayed explanation that adds its own level of suspense to the story. Unlike the Quijote I, this book stays on topic. There are no annoying side shows like shepherd stories to distract from the main story line, which might have happened if the author had taken time to explain more about the supernatural, or the fall-out from the witch trials, or--the most troubling omission in this story--why Sam the protagonist never did any homework and never suffered any consequences at school. In the end, the book gives some sympathetic treatment to the ancestral Cotton Mather, but there's no reconciliation with the descendants of the condemned, the girls who attempted to bully Sam the protagonist in high school. But the most obvious question in all this was neither asked nor answered: who in the hell names their kid 'Cotton'? Would he have felt such a need to prove himself by fighting imaginary witchcraft if he had been named Benedict or Arnold or Donald?

Dan Jenkins has been a sports journalist since he was in high school in the 1940s. During that period, he wrote for various Dallas/Fort Worth newspapers before relocating to New York City and gigs with Sports Illustrated, Playboy and Golf Digest. In addition to publishing articles for those magazines, he also penned several highly entertaining novels (including Semi-Tough, Dead Solid Perfect, Life Its Ownself, Fast Copy and Baja Oklahoma). His Ownself is largely a memoir, filled with entertaining anecdotes from his decades of covering golf, college and professional football and various other high profile sporting events. Jenkins came from a different generation of sports journalist that covered a different generation of athlete, often as not, the two sharing drinks and chasing women on the night before the big game. You can imagine, in Jenkins’s opinion, present day athletes don’t measure up against the likes of Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Bobby Layne, Sam Baugh and Doak Walker. Chief atop his list of mollycoddled, pampered, spoiled, modern athletes is Tiger Woods. Jenkins has waged a feud against Woods from his Golf Digest soapbox for many years now. Jenkins is the consummate curmudgeon, and admittedly so.I’ve read almost every Jenkins book to date and have found them to be very entertaining, easy reads, and this one is no exception. Seventy years of experience has given him plenty of material. If you have read and enjoyed his earlier work, you will not be disappointed.

Dan Jenkins is somewhat of a polarizing character, seen by some of the more tightly-wound in the world of sports and sportswriting these days as a politically-incorrect dinosaur, but there's no denying his bonafides as a sportswriter. In a career that has spanned 65 years - so far - he has written about golf and college football, mostly, and other sports when called upon to do so, for the Fort Worth Press, Dallas Herald, Sports Illustrated, and Golf Digest, with a few years of providing a sports column to Playboy magazine as well. He has covered more of golf's major tournaments than any writer living, and speaking of that, he is one of only three golf writers to have been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame (the others being Herbert Warren Wind and Bernard Darwin) and the only one inducted, in his words, "while still vertical".In "His Ownself: A Memoir", Jenkins reaches into his formidable memory and comes back with tales of his early life growing up in a sports-crazy town, Fort Worth, Texas, in a sports-crazy time, the 1930s. College football and golf were the most important sports of his formative years, with the TCU Horned Frogs in town and the SMU Mustangs just down the road in Dallas, not to mention that two of the greatest golfers ever to swing a club, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, were also Fort Worth native sons.Jenkins began his career with the Fort Worth Press, starting on the job as an incoming college freshman. Over the years he met and wrote about all the greats - he got to know Ben Hogan while still a college golfer and sportswriter for the Forth Worth Press, and came to know the great man very well over the years. Besides innumerable columns and sidebars, he has penned eleven novels - three of which that have been made into movies, with varying degrees of success - and nine nonfiction books. At age 84 he is still writing for Golf Digest, and attending golf's major tournaments - the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open, and the PGA Championship - to provide eager readers with his unique insights.Readers of this book who have read his other work - and I cannot imagine that they won't have - will recognize the tenor of his fictional tales in the stories he tells of his early life and subsequent career. Many characters and personalities, and even thinly-disguised versions of real-life incidents from his own life, have made their way into his fiction over the years, and the dedicated Jenkins reader will be delighted to discover these serendipities as they read this book. I'm sure that some more critical readers, encountering the real-life incidents in this memoir that have been reflected in Jenkins' fiction will lambast him for the roman-a-clef qualities of his novels, but personally, I delighted in discovering these matchups between real life and fiction. The bottom line is that anyone who is a fan of sportswriting, especially where it pertains to golf from the days of Hogan, Nelson, and Snead to the present, is doing themselves a disservice if they don't read "His Ownself: A Memoir". Over the years, Dan Jenkins saw it all, knew them all - and wrote about it all, in the kind of brash, sometimes cynical, sometimes playful - but always insightful - prose that is a rare commodity in these tip-toeing days of million-dollar tournament paychecks and big-buck corporate sponsorship. No sports fan's library is complete without this book.

I have most every book Dan Jenkins has written (I think I have all of them!)... and enjoyed several movies based on his grand works (SEMI-TOUGH will always be easily accessible in my DVD collection). HIS OWNSELF: A SELF-MEMOIR, his latest creation, is my personal favorite. I have the honor and pleasure of knowing Dan, both of us living in the same city, Fort Worth, and existing in approximately the same age bracket. Being in his company is never a bore! This book captures the easiness and traits of the best sports writer on the planet. No, I'm not "laying it on a bit thick"! Dan Jenkins has won every single award possible, yet maintains that special quality of writing --- in the same frame as he speaks. He is a casual conversationalist, and the pages reflect the feeling he is chatting with you! I found myself laughing out loud as Dan focused on some of the happenings in his personal life, yet he also reveals some facts pertaining to his ultra-successful professional career that grab the attention in a strong manner that could never be contrived! He knows all of the top pro golfers, of course (he is amongst those special giants in the WORLD GOLF HALL-OF-FAME!) and shares many mind boggling memories with us. Although he is highly diversified when it comes to sports, especially college and pro football, the golf links seem to be his specialty. He was a close, personal friend of Ben Hogan (played dozens of rounds of golf with the man many, including his peers, considered to be the grand master of them all, yet almost "unapproachable"). He releases his thoughts toward Tiger, as well as almost every big winner in the difficult game, dating back to the '50s. Dan doesn't put on the brakes, it would be completely "against the grain" for him to do so --- even though he may make some of the top players develop a case of the "yips" as they absorb this masterpiece! This is one book that I promise you'll enjoy, even if you're not hooked on golf. Of course, you'd expect this from Dan Jenkins. He breaks par on every page!

Definitely not one of my favorite wow books but still very good.

I loved this book! It details the meetings of the Dragon Aspects when they were still proton-dragons and how they saved their world and earned the chance to become the Aspects. I love that it is told from the viewpoint of Malygos who I've always felt got shafted by Blizzard from a Lore standpoint. All in all a great book.

Good Book

Good book

I loved it and it fit with the lore however I have also read and am familiar with all of the WoW books so I may be biased.

Fun book. Writing can be a challenge to get through since it is written from both Malagos and Kelec's perspective. I learned a lot about the lore though and it was a super interesting story.

this was exactly what it promised to be, love it.

I like the beginning of the aspects.
