I liked the first book in this series, but this one is so much better. The story development is rich and full. You get a strong feel for the characters, and the questing nature of finding a new home was well developed. I will say that the mayor and his wife are just ... weird. Their interactions are so strange at times.I love Char though, a great character and TH keeps getting better too. They make a great pair. I can't wait to see how their nanites evolve in the future. This story, and universe, keeps getting better and better Awesome Craig, and Michael too. (I read the author notes. ;))

To me anything that Craig Martelle writes will keep you riveted to your seat to read. Once I started reading, I had to finish it. The strength and personalities of the characters come alive with Craig's masterful telling of the journey of Terry H Walton and his new bride Char. We see a few glimpses into the past to see where Terry is now and how the love and strength of Char helps heals wounds. The combine leadership of Terry & Char is second to no one. Terry is driven to help good folks to survive, an goes out there to do it.

This series will have you falling in love with the charecters, and cheering them on as you watch them grow as people. I've read every book in less than a day...can't put the damn things down. Character development keeps you interested in each person as they grow, and you just can't wait to see what they will do next as the harshness of the dystopian world throws more hardships in their path.

I thought the first book in this series was good enough to read the next one. Now I've read number three and they have improved exponentially with each new book. I'm really glad Craig Martelle can produce such good stories so swiftly. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book. Michael Anderle's introduction of The Kutherian Gambit universe, from which this takes off was genius.

This is one of the greatest series I have ever read! A lot of series seem to have characters brake character just to further the plot or to fill plot holes. Not this series every character feels like a real and unique person no characters that are just plot devices. Best of all the story is believable and really allows you to get immersed in the story. Basically no wtf did they do that for moments or scratching your head at motivations of certain characters. All in all a great post apocalyptic/romance/action series that I would recommended to anyone!

Mr. Martelle has taken an already fantastic storyline and set of characters and has brought new life to the TH world. Terry and Char, yep hoping that would happen and guess what you have to read the books to really find out. Mr. Martelle has yet to disappoint in his writing, his fast pace, in your face wagons ho type of adventure. Going to start the fourth book in this series and know for a fact all of the questions I have will be answered there and in the continuation of the series.

I enjoy long involved series with multiple interacting characters And the Nomad series fits this to a T! Action, intrique, insight and a view of post apocalyptic America will leave you page turning deep into the night. Trust me, give this book and the others a try, it will be well worth it.Should be read in order.

Mr. Martelle has written another great book in his Nomad series. The character development is phenomenal (Terry and Char finally figure a few things out - now to get a mate for Clyde so they can deal with puppies!).It appears Mr. Martelle is planning to write ten books in this series. I'm eagerly looking forward to reading every one!

I am a picky reader. I can't abide things that are clumsily written, dull, boring, formulaic, unconvincing, uninvolving. I loved this novel because it's none of the above. I admired the way the author seamlessly interwove the love stories of three couples in three different eras, in all their complex, bawdy, devoted glory. I give it a strong recommendation.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book despite initially disliking Holly. She grew on me as the book progressed and the historical characters were so well written that I could not put this book down. I found myself googling all the historical characters, places and events and was pleasantly surprised to find historically accurate facts. A job well done Ms.Cornick, I will be looking for your other books.

This book kept my interest from the first chapter. The mysterious items that follow throughout the past and present are well treated. I liked the characters from the past, and the present as well. Good story if you like books that go from the past to the future. Enough mystery to keep you reading for the conclusion.

You will feel the Winter Queen's emotions as your own and you will build your own image of Ashdown in your mind. The characters are well developed and it just takes you to another place. A book that you can get lost in is the best!

Great mystery although I have to admit as was more invested in the modern day characters than the ones in the past. Still really good. There is actually a book out about Elizabeth Stuart by Nancy Goldstone that I read before this one that gave it a lot of context. I highly recommend it if you are interested in the real story.

Not my norm but I quite enjoyed the different turns this book took. House of Shadows has romance & history mixed with modern day suspense making it a worthy read. I think readers of all genres will enjoy this story.

About the Author

Doug Hocking was born on Long Island and spent part of his youth in the whaling and sailing ports along the coast breathing in the sea air as Tom Jeffords did the Great Lakes air in Ashtabula. Doug Hocking has undertaken a very ambitious and, I'm sure, what must have been a very difficult task for an author of the biography of a historical person, Tom Jeffords. Jeffords is almost an unknown figure in America's history. Much on Jefford's early life is virually unknown and much of the information available to him is based on suppositions that it even involved 'the' Tom Jeffords who is the subject of this biography is questionable. As is stated at times in the introduction and early chapters, Jeffords was a very private individual who left very minimal written record of his doings at any time. It is not until we get to the chapters about Jefford's involvement with Cochise and the Chiricahua Apaches can we actually know that Tom Jeffords was there for we can find other accounts of his time as Indian Agent for the Chiricahuas in pervious histories of that time. The author is to be congratulated for his attempt to put together the first full biography of the man portrayed in the movie and TV series, 'Broken Arrow' and the Elliott Arnold novel, 'Blood Brother'.The historical Tom Jeffords was a far cry from the way he was portrayed by actors James Stewart and John Lupton.

This book is about my great great uncle. From what I know its accuracy is close. One major issue is the "chief" on the cover isn't the chief but his son. They looked a lot alike but definitely not Cochise pictured on the cover.

The book met my expectations.enlightening me to a very turbulent time in our history.

I just finished reading the book Tom Jeffords: Friend of Cochise (2017) by Doug Hocking. I will admit that my historical interests have not extended beyond my great-grandfather’s history but having moved to Arizona last year I decided to learn a little about my new home. I had read a few general histories of the state but I had no idea what to expect from this new book, and I must say I was in for a pleasant surprise. I had not previously known of Arizona pioneer Tom Jeffords and after reading Mr. Hocking’s book I am amazed that Jeffords is not a household name in Arizona.Regarding the book, I am impressed with the daunting research. The reader, upon examining the thorough and well-sourced end-notes, will instantly realize that Mr. Hocking has done his homework. The photographs include welcomed period prints, but what really catches my attention are the inclusion of modern comparison photographs taken by Hocking himself, meaning he traveled to the remote locations to capture and share the true story of Tom Jeffords, exposing that this is not just a profit-making venture for Mr. Hocking, but a true work of passion. That passion shines throughout every page of this book.

This book is a decent, gap-filling, focused and useful volume on testing perl with the use of the perl Test modules.About the book:This is narrowly and tightly focused on testing, and use of the "Test::" series of objects and techniques in Perl. It covers basic setups and use, and then expands into using mock objects and the mock modules, which are not covered well, if at all, in other published texts, at least not from the standpoint of being a software tester (as opposed to a coder).It also shows how to drive and mock-up database testing, and the various ways to go about testing web sites and back-ends with Perl. Finally, it covers Test::Class, which sets up Unit Testing, for those coming from a jUnit or nUnit angle. And it touches on testing from other aspects, such as testing libraries or interactive code.Criticisms:I have found that most of the O'Reilly "Notebooks" are priced too highly for their small amount of content, and the content is usually very minimal. This book is the one exception I've found in that series.That being said, I still believe that it should be priced around $20, or perhaps $25. But $5-10 is a minor quibble considering this is the only book of its type (Perl testing).Another valid criticism is that much of the information in this book can be found spread all over the internet in various places, and some parts can be found in other Perl books. That is true - but ultimately irrelevant. Disparate clusters of information without completeness or context is simply not very valuable when compared to a solid text focused on the subject matter.Bottom Line:It is a good compilation and reference for its subject, with a lot of information and context provided, which makes it superior to a collection of links and snippets here and there on the internet.If you are a Perl coder or a tester, this is a handy book to have on your shelf.

I'm written a lot of perl code, and read a lot of evangelism about testing, but had never done much in the way of actual testing. I was exactly the person for whom this book was intended. And, it worked! The information about testing seems very strong, even authoritative, although since I know little else about it except for what I've learned from this book, I can't say that with my authority of my own. I've read lots of O'Reilly books, but this was my first in the Developer's Notebook series. I don't think it's revolutionary approach or anything, but it does work quite nicely, very focused on the practical, easy to apply immediately. All in all, a very nice book for the situation I was in. If you are in a similar situation, you'll probably like it too.

Love this book, excellent intro to Perl testing. One of the few (or only) books on Perl testing out there. Not sure what the people who gave it a low rating would've recommended instead - there are some web docs out there but they are all by chromatic too.Contents include the following:Test::More, Dest::Deep, test_ok, cmp_deeply, is, Devel::Cover, Test::Harness, Mock modules, program testing, testing databases and Apache, and much more.Fairly easy to follow. If you program seriously in Perl, but need to learn more about testing, this is the book to have.

This is not a book on the language itself, but on the interesting ways we can use to write unit-level tests in Perl. Perl testing is essential for any good Perl programmer. Tests are not just a way of making sure the code works, they act as a spec for the code. Writing tests regularly will teach a programmer to write meaningful and simple functions - a very important programming tip that people often forget. If you get into the habit of testing often, you'll learn to write good code.This book does a fantastic job of explaining that. The style adopted here is such that you can possibly start at any page in the book and get a list of steps to get your job done. Remember this is a developer's notebook, not a typical textbook. So it is going to be like a bunch of notes on different topics, all related to each other. In that sense the sequence of topics progresses only in terms of logical complexity and not such that you need to learn something from earlier chapters to understand later chapters. This however implies that advanced and thorough knowledge of Perl is assumed. This is not a book on Perl itself - more like a book on testing, but using Perl.

This is a great book because it teaches the novice how to do simple tests and shows experienced testers some of the more complicated things you can do with tests. Shortly after reading this book I emarked on packaging up a module, intending to get it onto CPAN. Trying to get a module created and packaged is not terribly hard, but it is difficult knowing where to start. The same is true with writing tests. This book removed that barrier. If writing tests for your software seems like an intimidating prospect, get this book: it will probably tell you what you need to know and will certainly give you an excellent place to start. It may even give guidance with some of the trickier tests you come up with.Why 4/5 stars? I have found a few bits and pieces of information that would have been useful but the book did not cover (or, more precisely, I do not remember the book covering). Perhaps the most important omission is specification-based testing using LectroTest. It could be that the module came out after the book was published in which case the book gets 4/5 stars for its age. I could be wrong, but I get the impression that Perl testing has grown a lot since 2005, so perhaps they should write a second edition.I can say this much: If O'Reilly were to put out a second edition of this book, I would buy it.

Great information. Great presentation. Would have liked a few more sections on putting multiple parts together to really make it useful, but was good enough I was able to figure it out with some engineering.

This is a terrible book. Of all of the things that could have been said about Amy Carmichael on a child’s level, this author picked ridiculous, meaningless stories. There is no continuity to the story. I am very disappointed. I bought it to give to a girl in my Sunday School class who wants to be a missionary. This book is so bad that I can’t even give it to her. The author calls the missionary trip an “adventure” . It was a waste of money.

I read this to my preschool class. We were studying missions and what it means to be a missionary. This book fulfilled my purpose very well.

The story didn't make sense. It talks about how naughty Amy Carmichael was as a kid and then jumps to the fact that God gave her brown eye because He knew she would grow up to work in India.

I wish this talked about God more. there were a few random very short stories about her childhood that had nothing to do with God and I didn't understand the point. I think they were trying to show that she was daring and adventurous but that's most definitely not the only reason people become missionaries. It also ended abruptly. None of the stories were fully developed. I get that it's targeted toward younger kids but it was too simple, in my opinion

I loved this book! I have three kids (4, 3 and 18 months), and the older two loved reading and engaging with this book. The product itself is well-made, and the content is great for preschoolers and young elementary. There aren't many resources like this out there!
