Instalment 8 of the Pony Jumpers series is told from Tess Maxwell’s point of view. The biggest show of the year is coming up and Tess’s family all expect her to ride and compete on Misty Magic. Tess has never liked the pony, she was bullied into riding Misty by her older sister, Haley. Now that Haley is going to have surgery to remove a tumour from her brain, Tess feels like she has to compete to keep the peace at home. However, after a fall, Tess is more frightened of Misty than ever before…Friends Tess, AJ, Katy and Susannah arrive at the Pony of the Year show to compete. These young ladies are growing up and understanding how important true friends are — in the ring and outside of it. They share in the glory of the wins and console one another when things do not go as well as they had hoped. They help each other discover their strengths and learn from their mistakes...The books in this series send positive messages to the targeted audience about the true value of friendship, honesty and trust.
Another wonderful installment in the Pony Jumpers series (but the book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel by readers who haven't read books 1-7). I particularly enjoyed its portrayal of Misty, the pony from hell. Or at least that's how he appears to be in the eyes of Tess. Tess is constantly reminded of the fact that her sister Hayley is a better rider than herself and is supposedly the only person in the world who can ride Misty properly. Of course, Tess discovers that horses tend to behave as their riders expect them to, and it's nice to see her grow in confidence (in a realistic fashion) over the course of the novel. I also appreciated the realism in the book's depiction of someone experiencing a serious illness. All too often in both YA and adult literature, illness is portrayed as something ennobling. Even someone who is sick is still a person, and still retains all the flaws she had when she was healthy. Highly recommended.
Fantastic entry in this great series!
I so enjoyed reading this book. I think the New Zealand Board of Tourism (surely there is such a thing!) could use Ms. Lattey's books to promote tourism. I know I would love to be able to book the next flight there!
This book was great I love how all the ponys have super cute names and all the characters are becoming a teem
Wonderful book. Beautiful setting, and likeable, well-developed characters. Loved reading about Tess, as well as learning more about Jonty and his family. All the challenges Tess faces, and the emotions she goes through with Misty, are relatable to anyone who rides - I can't recommend this book enough. Too many pony books neglect to acknowledge the fear that can come with riding, let alone competing, and I thought it was very well described. One of my favourites so far!
I so look forward to these stories. Love how you get views from each rider in their situations. Please keep them coming!
