As a former model, I own a lot of makeup, fashion, and styling books. Most of them seem to think over-50s have lost the will to live... or at least we've lost an interest in liking what we see in the mirror. This book is an exception. Finally, someone explained how over-50s can use eye makeup so it looks natural AND attractive, as opposed to garish and you've-got-to-be-kidding. (Honestly, even with the most meticulous makeup application using an oh-dear-heaven scary magnifying mirror, I couldn't seem to get it right until I read this book.)The photos in this book are as inspiring as the advice. Seriously, I don't care if some of these women have benefited from the best facelifts in the world... they make 50+, 60+, and beyond look terrific! That reframed how I thought of my age.If, like me, you've had enough birthdays to feel somewhere between blah and "here granny, rest your feet," this is the book to buy and USE. You'll feel MUCH better about yourself. If, like me, you look "painted" if you wear more than minimal makeup, but you don't know how to get the best effects from the least, this is the book you want. I look natural... but better!Oh, I've enjoyed books like Staging Your Comeback: A Complete Beauty Revival for Women Over 45, and the fashion chapter in Entre Nous: A Woman's Guide to Finding Her Inner French Girl makes it worth owning. However, no other book offers as many different kinds of makeup tips -- with colors and brand names in a wide price range -- as "Makeup Wakeup." I needed a fresh, new, natural look, and found exactly what I was looking for. Instead of spending 20 minutes in front of the mirror, I can spend five minutes and know that I look attractive... not just "pretty good for my age."Yes, I'm a realist. I know that I can't pass for 35. That's not my goal. I just want to look my best. That's what this book delivers: A way to look your best, whatever your style. From natural (like me) to glam, and from drugstore brands to surgical lifts, "Makeup Wakeup" has something for everyone... and plenty of it.It took me a couple of times reading through this book to realize how to get the most from it. The presentation is kind of different from other makeup books, and -- on a casual browse -- you might not realize it.However, reading this book page-by-page, I had the "ah-HA!" moments I needed to buy the right kinds of cosmetics -- and then use them correctly -- so I look good, not "Baby Jane" painted.Even better, this look will probably suit me for the next 10+ years. If you're over 50 (or 60, or beyond), and at your wit's end, trying to find a look that's right for you... the answer is probably in this book.

I'm 74 and havn't really bothered with eye make up for the last several years; a little foundation, some blush and lip gloss;that was it...until I read " The Makeup Wakeup". I was inspired and bought some of their recommendations, sat down and startedplaying, following the very easy to understand visual directions. Suddenly, I looked so much younger and, I might add, so muchprettier! I can't believe it! My eyes really sparkle, my brows are now brushed and filled in and I've thrown away all the old makeupthat had been sitting in my drawer for the last ten years. I'm even using a soft colored lip pencil which defines the shape of mymouth. This book is FABULOUS!!!! Thank you Lois and Sandy, you've changed my life. P.S. My husband keeps telling me howlovely I look.Nina

I did glean some useful info from this book, but wasn't overly impressed. I found the makeup to be too heavy handed, especially the eye makeup. Black eyeliner is VERY aging, especially on fair-skinned gals - I gave it up when I turned 40! The two women in the book wearing LESS makeup, Patty Hansen and Sigourney Weaver, looked much younger and fresh-faced. I do love makeup and enjoy experimenting with new products, but I'd rather put the emphasis on top shelf serums, creams and serious sunblock, and continue to use a light hand with makeup. My conclusion: Less is indeed more when you're over 45.

This is a great book! I've been feeling depressed that my tried-and-true makeup routine no longer working for me as a 60 year old woman (boy that number looks old!!) I loved all the advice in the book, have started trying new techniques that they recommend and am very excited about the "new me" that is emerging! I love the fact that the authors recommend products in a range of price categories. They show beautiful 50 - 60 year old models "before" and "after" and explain the techniques they use for all aspects of make-up application. It sounds cliché, but I truly do feel very positive and optimistic now about finally understanding how to maximize my looks moving forward. Thanks so much for the advice and honesty from Lois and Sandy!!

I'm of a certain age, and, I spent New Year's Day this year looking at books on how to look cool even if you are well past 25. What I didn't like about this book was its heavy reliance on surgical techniques and botox. Heck, I can barely afford drugstore cosmetics. I'd have liked to have learned more ways I could use what's available to "the rest of us", as opposed to the high-end cosmetics. I'd have liked more detailed photos about how to apply the colors. It was not to be.Still, it was interesting to find out how people with money do their faces and see the final result (it was sort of like More magazine on steroids, as far as the finished results were shown)If you have a lot of money to spend, this book will tell you exactly how to spend it. If you don't, and you can get this book on the cheap, then it will be an interesting read.
