The workbook is very comfortable to work with. It's well organized with large pages and font size. Writing space is ample and height between lines supports even large handwriting. The author advises that this is not intended as an instructional book, but as a companion to the e-book. I was highly impressed with the e-book's in-depth coverage of the planning phase of the writing process. Since the workbook is in synch with the e-book, it's easy to refer back (or work with them side-by-side).Each workshop (chapter) starts with a VERY brief (less than a page) introduction to the concept. Occasionally there are what I would call terminology clarifications for an exercise, also very brief, and there's a handy glossary at the end of the book. Each workshop (10) has multiple exercises that ask for summary answers to the big planning questions (POV, Character Arcs, Setting, Theme, Goals, Conflicts, etc.). Preceding each exercise are "brainstorming questions" to assist in developing your summary answers, and there are example answers for each exercise that follow the same three stories (three different genres) throughout,Workshops One through Seven walk you smoothly through the planning process and prepare you for the last three (and my favorites): Turning your idea into a Summary Line, which you turn into a Summary Blurb, which you turn into a Synopsis. Then, as Ms Hardy says, it's "Time To Write" (and you'll be ready!).I highly recommend the e-book, the workbook, and Ms Hardy's exceptional blog, Fiction University.

This is great resource for a fiction writer who likes to write out brainstorming, character, and plot development in longhand. For someone who has the companion book, but prefers to type those things into a file, the main value is that each section, in addition to the same questions that the companion book has, usually has one or more bonus questions not in the companion book for generating additional/deeper ideas. If you are NOT a beginner and are familiar with most writing craft terms, you might be able to use this workbook without the companion book as there are some explanations and limited examples of the different elements to crafting a novel. For beginners, or those who like more detailed explanations and examples, you will probably think it's worth it to have the companion. If you only want to buy one or the other, I'd recommend the companion over this, but I did think it was worth buying even though I chose to type everything into a computer file rather than write in the workbook.

Whether you're a new writer on one with years and books under your belt like me, this book will help you with that next manuscript - though you really need to get the textbook "Planning Your Novel" to go with it. The workbook alone will be "okay" but the two together work much better.

I don't plot. But I do need some structure to follow, to be sure I don't end up chasing dead ends. I've written ten books, but this workbook highlighted holes in my idea, and made me think - not about the plot necessarily, but about the characters, their arcs and their conflicts.I feel I have a much more solid foundation to begin with now. I highly recommend Janice's book, and now, the workbook, to put the theory into practice. Not just for beginners!

I have purchased several books by Janice Hardy and have visited her web site many times because she goes the extra mile to give you a ton of information. I am so happy I bought this workbook because I can use it to start a new novel or go to certain chapters for in-depth help when I get stuck on a work in progress. She has a plethora of brainstorming exercises that help get my creative mind working. (I also purchased the excellent companion book, "Plotting Your Novel: Ideas and Structure.") I am grateful to the author for all of her well thought out, well written novel-planning tools. Highly recommend.

All writing tips by this author are so helpful. I think I have all her books.

Gotta find time to read indepth, yet so far, very good.

Nothing online said this workbook needed a companion book which is why I bought it. Since I received, in looking thru I've found out it completely needs the companion book so now I'll be paying twice as much as I wanted to.
