I use several commentaries each week. Some are new, and some are older. This one is among my favorites. It is easy to understand, gives in depth knowledge without becoming bogged down, and is well written. This is a great commentary for anyone looking to learn more about the scriptures and get a different perspective. I have purchased this commentary set, OT and NT, and given these to students and ministers as a way to help them expand their horizons. Definitely recommend.
The margin between two pages is too narrow to read it. However, the commentary itself is out-standing.
This is definitely a great guide to understanding the Old Testament. The format is a full re-write of the Old Testament in an understandable way with a little bit more insight. It's enough context to enhance a true Bible study but enough for gaining an exhaustive understanding. You still need to "study". I would compare it to very light cliff notes.3 stars because the quality of ink and clearness of the letters varies page to page and you definitely have to put pressure on the binding to read near the gutter.overall, would buy again.
Very helpful when reading the Bible to know the historical timeframe and the customs. He also gives a reasonable understanding to each book of the Bible. I use it often to teach as well as for devotions.
Great reading, explanations and very clear translations of passages that are often difficult to understand.
So far we are liking it very much. We had a big set and it is just to much when in study and you have a question on a verse. I don't want to read another book, I just want to see if I am on the right track and others views. It tells you a lot but not tooooo much. Just always pray before you read your bible for God to let his message known to you, and please don't just take MANS view. I think for study this is wonderful as the study bibles never seem to give you enough. The huge commentary sets give you to much and this is just right :).
There are 2 volumes, Old Testament & New Testament. Write to these seller first to Make sure that you are getting the volume you ask for. I found at least 2 sellers selling the New Testament version listed under the Old Testament.I found the New Testament Volume (used book store)and ABSOLUTELY LOVED the information and HAD TO GET the Old testament version. It is basically a verse by verse (sometimes by paragraph) breakdown that provides deeper insight referencing old/new testament scriptures and shows how it all ties together, historical insight and some Greek words are expounded . They also fairly represent two sides of a viewpoint if there are other interpretations. Sometimes when I'm just looking up a passage I end up reading a couple pages because it reads like an engaging novel.I haven't really found any information to be "opinion based"...Yet! To me, it answers any questions I've had and feel it's quite adequate. Love Walvoord and his TEAM's input. My girlfriend uses the Believer's Bible Commentary and after we compared random scriptures, we both found Walvoord's information more of what we really wanted to know. I have an OLDER (1960) Wycliff commentary and the information is not as in depth. Maybe the newer version is more in depth.Even with my great study bibles and their in-text commentary, I still find myself frequently reaching for these when I want a little more information or understanding.Love it! Love it! Love it!
This commentary, done by the faculty of Dallas Theological Seminary, is an excellent Bible Study resource that comes from a seminary with a reputation for outstanding teaching and conservative Bible beliefs. It is very readable for the average person, and helps me better understand the background and logic of what was written originally in languages I have no clue how to translate or read, such as Hebrew and Greek. I often just pick a book out of the Bible, and follow along in my NIV Bible and the commentary for that particular book of the Bible, and get a whole new understanding on what message God is passing along in His word. There is so much history in the Bible that I'm ignorant of, and this commentary greatly helps fill in the gaps of my Biblical knowledge when reading anything in the Old or New Testaments. On those occasions when I am asked to lead a Bible study on a particular passage, I go to this resource first to get an overall understanding of the passage and likely original intent of the words of the passage.I love the fact that the text that occurs in the NIV translation is in boldface in the commentary which helps me understand the exact passage or phrase that is being explained. I also love the explanation of some of the original words that were penned that sometimes cannot easily be translated into English in just one word.I believe this is an excellent resource for anyone doing Bible Study or wanting to know more about God's Word, and if you like the NIV translation of the Bible as I do, these books exactly parallel that translation to make it very easy to follow along not only the words that were written and translated, but the ideas that those words may have been trying to express. I love the fact that where there is some chance for interpretation of the original words, that this commentary presents scholarly thought on that and possible meanings of the original words.Because it is essentially the product of one well-regarded seminary, the product is consistent throughout in it's view of the Scriptures and conservative in its viewpoint. While many contributed to the work, it reads as if it was written by one person who had a tremendous storehouse of knowledge of the original languages and both the letter of the translation as well as likely thoughts it was trying to convey in the original languages. This is a fantastic companion to any NIV Bible and makes Bible study much more enjoyable and meaningful. No serious NIV Bible study should be without it.
