Kind of wavered between giving this two or three stars, but there were parts I liked so I went with three. My boyfriend recommended this because he remembered reading it in middle school and thought it was awesome, though he did add as an after thought that he wasn't sure if he'd still like it or not. He's not a reader, so I figured it must be pretty good. After finishing it I realized that, had I read this in middle school, I probably would have loved it as well. Reading it now though, I can't say the same.First off, I'm gonna say that you can't go into this thinking it was actually a real diary because it just simply is not. It's been ripped apart by people saying a teenage girl would normally ramble on more about boys and idle chit chat, but in the books defense who would actually read it then? It's clear it's not real, but let's be honest with the exception of Anne Frank, no one is interested in a reading a teenage girls diary.It does have it's ups and downs, and I did get attached to the main character, but so many times I found myself wondering where it was actually going. It gets near the end and she's doing good and I was just happy with how things were working out for her. Then, in the last entry she just kind of adds, as an after thought, that she doesn't think she'll keep a diary forever because adults don't need to, even though she makes it clear she doesn't feel like an adult yet. Really just out of no where she mentions adults don't need to write in diaries and suddenly she's done. It felt like the author (Beatrice Sparks) wasn't sure how to end it/ got sick of writing and just kinda tossed that in there. And then there's the epilogue. And you're left with a, "where did that come from?" feeling. Again, she didn't work it in very well, and jumped from one extreme to the next.This may be a spoiler so if you really don't want to spoil the ending don't read this part, but after the book ended I could think of only one thing. If you've ever seen the movie Mean Girls, during the sex ed. classes the gym teacher says "Don't have sex, you WILL get pregnant, and you WILL die." I feel like Beatrice Sparks is that gym teacher's mother. "Don't do drugs, you WILL die." That's really how sporadic the ending felt for me.All in all, I didn't hate it, but it could've been done a lot better.

I first read Go Ask Alice when I was in middle school. My sister asked me to buy it for her~ so I did. I thought it'd be kind of boring now that I'm 56 yrs old. I was wrong!! It is even more meaningful to me now! I work with the public and see a LOT of drug addicted people. This book is so worth-the-read for every young person. I highly suggest reading this book!!

Pretty good, I don’t usually read books that were written like a journal but I heard good thinks about it. It was a real page turner and kept you interested the whole time. The ending make you extremely happy until you flip the page and then find out what happens 3 weeks later. I sat there pissed off after I closed the book so the next day I looked up blogs about the book to get more information and I was extremely disappointed to find out that the book was actually fiction. At first the book left me feeling shocked that this was a true story and I totally believed everything I read and then when I found out it was fake It just makes the you feel like you were lied to. The ending pissed me off but finding out it was all fake pissed me off even more.

Tedious. Preachy. Obviously fiction. This may have worked to scare kids into not using drugs in the 1970s; I hope no one is relying on it to do that today. Basically, it’s a quaint, naive relic from the beginning of the “war on drugs.” I did give it an extra star in recognition of the fact that it probably read better decades ago than it does today.

I have found this chart very helpful, because I have only lived in Tennessee ten weeks. My backyard is so thick with trees that often I'll only see a flash of color--I can see a bird's approximate size and its colors, but not its shape or any details. This chart narrows down what kind of bird it might be, and I can then look up the bird in my bird books and look to see if I have the correct bird once I get another glimpse of it. It can't really be used alone, as it doesn't give much detail or even a very good picture, and I've seen one or two birds already that aren't in it because they aren't common in the state, but it is very helpful for what it does do.

Excellent handy identification guide for TN birds. I work in a school and we see birds from our class windows. This is great to identify what we see.

"Planet Law School II" by Atticus Falcon is a thorough examination of how to succeed in law school. The book goes through a step-by-step analysis of the 1L year and how to succeed. From there Falcon describes the professors, 2L/3L classes, summer associate positions, the bar exam, and everything in between. This is the most exhaustive "how-to-succeed-in-law-school" book that exists.However, Falcon often goes on long, and completely unnecessary, rants. The book could be cut down to ~400 pages and contain the exact information present in his 830 page tome. Many of the rants are only marginally relevant and could be included at the end of the book (ex: Popov v. Hayashi.) Other rants are the size of an entire book and could be entirely omitted (ex: CH26.) The first ~300 pages are especially relevant to 1L's, although very repetitive, with ~100 pages of the rest of the book being good for 2/3L's.The best part about "Planet Law School II" is Falcon's constant referencing to other popular "how-to-succeed-in-law-school" books. Chapter 16 provides a thorough list of supplements all students should read before law school. In later chapters he expands this list to include books on legal research, logic, style, and arbitration."Planet Law School II" has its faults but overall is well worth the effort. I will personally try Falcon's method and reply to this review within a year on the value of PLSII.

With dwindling job prospects, fiercer competition, soaring tuition, and a known penchant for laziness, it would be very prudent for that student to do everything he/she can to ensure they do their best. 0L prep may or may not provide actual substantive help (in my opinion it does), but at least that person would have the psychological relief of knowing she's doing all she can to improve her future (provided she doesn't burn herself out). In this regard, PLSII is by far the best pre-law book out there. On the other hand, if a student skated by undergrad and got top grades along with an excellent LSAT score and he firmly decided to devote himself to law school (once he starts attending), then it would be ill-advised for that person to do substantial 0L prep.So bottom line is this: Give yourself a real and honest assessment of who you are and what you know you can do. If you feel you may be a bit underqualified for law school or very nervous, and know some 0L prep will at least alleviate your nerves, then by all means go for it. If your very confident in your abilities and have a track record to substantiate it, then ENJOY YOUR SUMMER! Go out and make it as memorable as you can, and at the very least don't spend it on forums and review pages talking about how much people don't need to prep. People are different in their our own ways.

I'm very satisfied with the book.It advises you on all necessary steps in order to achieve good grade in a law school. Plus, it tells you how to work hard before, while, and after the school to pass the Bar. Specifically, it tells you specifically what materials you need, schedules, etc. I wish I purchased this book earlier. You can buy most of the materials here, on Amazon.By the way, it costs almost nothing (4-5 gallons of gas nowadays) to get your questions answered. Should you follow the advice from the book and start learning and practicing early enough, I think the first scholarship will cover expenses.Please be advised that it is not a panacea (an answer or solution for all problems or difficulties). You would have to formulate your own opinion as to what to do and when to do.In my view, It is a must have investment in the school to formulate your own opinion and to become successful.

- Lots of typos everywhere especially in the code. I wonder if it was ever reviewed... " public enum ItemCatrgory {...} private ItemCatrgory category The main idea in the preceding code is ItemCateogry" I mean how would you trust author who is not able to write the word "category" correctly 2 out of 3 times.- Code is very dirty and looks like it's written by a first grade student- You won't find anything particularly useful regarding to RPG genre. This is NOT how the real RPG game is built. I couldn't find anything related to quest scripting engine (the heart of any RPG), dialog system etc. All the stuff in this book is very basic and you may find it for free. If this book would cost $5 it would probably worth it in case you just started learning Unity.If your intention to figure out how games like Fallout or The Elder Scrolls series are built this book won't give you any clue.

You can find free and better tutorials on the internet. Why waste $50 for a book that reads like they watched those same tutorials, then wrote this. It is terrible. It isn't even formatted well. It actually hurts my eyes to look at it

This book is excellent. If you are a beginner or intermediate who wants to create an RPG, this has most things you need to learn most of what it takes to put an RPG together. It covers game management, inventory system, stat system HUD, UI, Terrain creation and an excellent multiplayer section. The code examples are impressive, and the author does go into detail each and every aspect of the topics covered.I can not say enough about how the author emphasized "Design first, code later" ALWAYS have a goal on what you want to accomplish before coding a single line.This WOULD have been a 5, but it does not cover one of the most important aspect of RPG game programming, and that is one of a quest and dialogue system. What is an RPG without quests or dialogues? It is pretty much nothing. You can build a beautiful world, have a glorious scene with great characters and monsters, but for what? Why are you here? How do you get money? Is there a maiden or sir to woo?Being said, and just to reiterate, this is an incredible book, a MUST have for any beginner or intermediate game programmer who wants to learn what it takes to build a great RPG. Well done!

I remember the news stories about the RJR Nabisco LBO back when it was happening but didn't give them much notice at the time. After reading a few Michael Lewis books and becoming interested in all things Wall Street, I decided to read this to finally discover what all those news stories had been about. I wasn't disappointed!This is a really good book. My only issue with it (and it's really my own mental limitations as opposed to any flaw in the book) is that the cast of characters and companies is so large that I had to re-read sections and take time to digest it all. I got overwhelmed at times and wanted to break out a white board to sketch out an overview. It's a great read though and really hard to put down.

This should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in understanding the current financial world. The authors write a gripping account of the outsized personalities and egos of the 1980s LBO boom using their exhaustive list of contacts. The book reads like a movie as the personalities leap out of the page. A lot of today's issues are explored: real business vs the financial world, the possibilities and risks of leverage, captured boards and profligate executives vs activist investors.The authors pass along such perfect lines like, when speaking about RJR's expense account manager, "the only man who can take an unlimited budget and exceed it." I also liked Ross Johnson's summary of Wall Street: "Never play by the rules. Never pay in cash. And never tell the truth."

While not the same story as Enron, the corporate games and minimal concern for employees at RJR Nabisco was equally appalling. If you read about the Savings and Loan crisis you will also see much in common. I was only vaguely aware of this story and was riveted by it. I had trouble putting this book down. It's thorough while still an easy read and you don't need to be a student of economics to understand it). It's also scary because this is but one of very many examples of corporate, institutional, and wall street greed and self involvement that, unfortunately, is way too prevalent.

From Forstman Little's Crusade Against Junk Bonds (caps intended), to First Boston's out-of-nowhere bid that inevitably set up the KKR win, this book is filled with an abyss of unputdownable plots and subplots that leaves one edu-tained from start to finish.One of the best things about this book is how effectually the authors try to get inside the heads of the players and mini-players in a manner that adds both color to the story telling and insight into the deal. Like this passage:"Around eleven o'clock they were joined by Matthew Rosen, the team's thirty-six-year-old tax counsel. Rosen was a lawyer from the 'Thirtysome-thing' crowd: Italian suits, tassled loafers, an office crammed with modern-art [Kandisky likenesses I hear my mind wondering as a reader?], the kind of early 1970s rabble-rouser embarrassed to tell his Swarthmore class reunion he now made millions sniffing out tax loopholes for corporate takeovers".Some educational takeaways include the role of junk bonds, the intricacies as well as benefits/costs of LBOs with the help of management (i.e. friendly) vs. hostile takeovers, moral hazard/conflicts of interest issues involving banks and financial advisors, the crucial role of good valuation work and thorough due diligence, managing public relations, deal confidentiality, managing Board of Directors relations, information security and bid strategy. Will one be ready to enact one's first billion dollar LBO after completing this book? Not yet. I would Rick Rikerten's Book "Buyout: The Insider's Guide to Buying Your Own Company" if you are looking to gain practical insight on more compact deals for that.A book I came across entitled, "The New Financial Capitalists: Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and the Creation of Corporate Value" by George Baker and George Davis Smith would also complement the reading of Burrough's and Helyar's book quite well. The latter is a bit more academic than Barbarians At The Gate but it's often both fun and educational to look at some of the same topic matter from different angles.As far as the history making story emboldened on every page of this book, as the authors say "You couldn't make this stuff up."---Vel primus vel cum primis---

Interesting read. Well written with a fair amount of useful information for those in management or leadership roles.

Conversations move life forward. They can also stop things from moving forward. Relationships end on conversations and begin. Teams are formed and broken apart. Goals are made, expectations laid out, visions happen, all around conversations.Feelings get hurt in conversations, lies are told, deception, betrayal, all of these can happen in conversations.Enter the book Crucial Conversations Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High. I heard Joseph Grenny, one of the authors speak on this topic recently at the leadership summit and got a lot out of his session.All of us know the feeling of this kind of conversation and we know that this is where life changes.Here are 10 things I got from the book that I have found helpful in my life and leadership:1. When we face crucial conversations, we can do one of three things: We can avoid them, We can face them and handle them poorly, or We can face them and handle them well. At the heart of almost all chronic problems in our organizations, our teams, and our relationships lie crucial conversations—ones that we’re either not holding or not holding well. Christians and church staffs are notorious for avoiding crucial conversations. This is why churches often split, people leave hurt and visions never move forward. Instead of doing the hard work in a conversation, they are avoided. When in reality, because of what is at stake (salvation) and because of the calling of Jesus, we should do a better job of having crucial conversations.2. Individuals who are the most influential—who can get things done and at the same time build on relationships—are those who master their crucial conversations. We all know this to be true. If you aren't very good at dialogue, you sit back in wonder at those who are. They are able to gain more influence, get more done and people want to be on their team and a part of what they are doing. This is why raising the value of this skill and getting better at it matters so much. Things move forward or stop around conversations.3. The mistake most of us make in our crucial conversations is we believe that we have to choose between telling the truth and keeping a friend. Grenny said this at the summit and it grabbed my attention. This is one of, if not the main reason, most conversations stop and things do not move forward. Fear. Fear of a relationship ending, something stopping, getting fired or hurting someone. Yet, if we don't tell the truth, we often can't be a friend.4. People rarely become defensive simply because of what you’re saying. They only become defensive when they no longer feel safe. The problem is not the content of your message, but the condition of the conversation. If you are a boss and want honest feedback and conversation, people can't fear for their jobs or that you will yell at them. Recently, there has been a lot of writing online about pastors abusing people, creating a culture of fear, yelling at staff members, elders and volunteers and it blows my mind. If you are known for that as a pastor, you should be embarrassed.5. Be careful not to apologize for your views. This can be easy to do and it often happens as a way to soften your opinion or the blow in a conversation, but you shouldn't apologize for what you think. It is what you think. It might be hard or unpopular to say, but don't shy away from it. You may be wise to change how you phrase it, but always be willing to share what you think in a conversation.6. One of the ironies of dialogue is that, when talking with those holding opposing opinions, the more convinced and forceful you act, the more resistant others become. I done this very easily in the past. Yet, this practice keeps people from buying in and helping to make something happen. When we do this, we don't understand why people aren't on board. The reason is the harder we push our way, the harder they push their way.7. Speaking in absolute and overstated terms does not increase your influence, it decreases it. The converse is also true—the more tentatively you speak, the more open people become to your opinions. The more harshly we speak or the more we give the impression that there is only one way, the less likely it becomes that people will speak up. Now, on issues like vision, it must be clear and have agreement. But, in conversations, if we give the impression that something has been decided or that we aren't open to suggestions, we will kill discussion.8. When we feel the need to push our ideas on others, it’s generally because we believe we’re right and everyone else is wrong. This is another way the previous one. If you find yourself pushing your ideas, you aren't having a good dialogue and instead are simply giving out orders. That may be your leadership style, but it won't accomplish a healthy team environment and in the end, your church or business will never reach its full potential.9. The more you care about an issue, the less likely you are to be on your best behavior. As a leader or a person in a relationship, you must learn this well. This was an eye opening insight for me. I get very passionate about things, as most people do, and when I do, I can shut down dialogue and end up hurting people. We do this, often unintentionally because we care about something, because we believe we are right and have the only way forward.10. The fuzzier the expectations, the higher the likelihood of disappointment. When a crucial conversation ends, there must be clear expectations and guidance moving forward. It cannot be fuzzy or gray. Otherwise, a conversation has not ended, it is simply on pause.All in all, this was an incredibly helpful book. Some of it covered things I already knew but showed some helpful insights. I've already seen a change in some of my conversations with leaders at my church and in my family through this book. Definitely one I'd recommend.

Excellent! One of the most life-changing books I've ever read (and I'm a voracious reader). What you'll learn in this book applies to your personal and professional life. As a woman, I wish I would have read this book years ago. I would have been better prepared to ask for promotions and been a better listener as a mother. I've purchased 7 books as gifts for college-aged kids. I wish I would have known about this book years ago. It's a book that you can re-read many times and still gain tips to help you through crucial conversations.

I ordered this book because it seemed useful and I could see one of my friends behaving differently. I bought this in mind that a big storm was coming. I have made mistakes during emotionally charged conversations/arguments before and didn't want to go down the same path again. Not too soon after I purchased it, that friend brought the storm.I took my time to read this and skim over it again before I entered the conversation because I didn't want to go in feeling attacked, defensive, or angry. I wanted to know how I could handle things. I didn't want to talk and head into a storm in the first place, but reading this book helped me feel less apprehensive about talking. I didn't want to go in ready to fight, I took my time talking on my own terms because I didn't want to lose my friend while feeling hot-headed. I explained my intentions on why I took long to not give off the impression that I didn't care.The book took me about 6 hours to read but I didn't really count. I flagged many pages to the point when I almost ran out of flags. There were very few parts I skipped towards the end (of examples/possible scenarios that I didn't think related to me), but most of the book seemed very relevant. The many examples helped. I think as a reader it helps to take written/typed notes of your own as you go, but I did not take much (I will though).When I felt I was ready to talk, I went in. I tried utilizing what I remembered. I did look at the smaller details to address them and tried not playing "trivia pursuit" on things that that were brought up. I got more of my friend's perspective. After we talked about our concerns, we found our misunderstandings and similarities regarding situations, as well as our viewpoints on both. I also brought up some possible agreements on how to avoid disrespecting each other in the future and if we did, the topic is left open so we can revisit our misunderstandings or perspectives again without making an ultimatum and to communicate more healthily if we think something is off between us. I didn't want to just get things off our chest, I wanted to make it easier for us to communicate in a similar manner (finding solutions) in the future. I wouldn't have gotten to this point if it weren't for this book. I honestly was prepared to lose a friend and in that scenario, none of us wins because we learned nothing about ourselves and others, we only saw our own viewpoints. By the end of our conversation, my friend seemed satisfied. We both have our similarities, though we handled things differently, this book played a part in bringing things up to light and how to go about it.There are other things I am going to work on tackling, such as things in the workplace and not in my personal life and hope it turns out okay for everyone too.I only read this once and skimmed it once after that, yet it helped me get this far. I really recommend this book to anyone who wants to get better at such conversations and arguments. It's worth rereading, not a read-once-and-drop-it kind of book.

I struggle with communicating effectively. As I considered my professional development plan for the year, I knew this was an area I wanted to focus on. I learned about Crucial Conversations from SHRM and decided to make it a first step. I'm glad I did.The book is chock full of good ideas on ways to communicate more effectively when it really counts. The authors provide great tips to illustrate the principles and make them real. There are no shockers here. Everything is pretty common sense and yet, it took this book for me to put them together.I have already used the principles I learned in the book in crucial conversations both at home and work. I've certainly not mastered the art yet, but I do feel more prepared and a bit less anxious in these high impact situations. I look forward to continuing to practice and improve over time.If your life requires that you interact with others, this book is for you!
